Finishing a Matte graphite rod..

Hello, I am new to rod building and have been reading as much here at FAOL as I can to get pointers. The info here is awesome. One thing I am not clear on is what I should do to finish a Matte black graphite rod that I have. I understand that some rods come glossy/“finished” from the factory, but if you have a dull black blank do you still just finish the wraps or do you try to finish/coat the entire rod?

I would just finish the wraps. The matte black or grey finish looks good on the finished rod and is stealthy when it is fished. If you want to put a finish on it, you had better know what you are doing or you could end up with a monumental mess.

Thanks, that is what I was sort of thinking as I really don’t know what I am doing! LOL>

If you use gunmetal thread you will get a transparent finnish with a grey tint. Looks great on matte blank. Garnet also looks great.

or black or green or red or gold or blue…Almost all colors look good on a matte blank have fun making up your mind

I like Claret. I’ll post a pic in a new thred, shortly.

Ok! I posted the rod with the claret thread. If you don’t like the color to stand out so much, just don’t put the color preserver on it. It really looks nice without, however with the inlays I needed to use it to make it work.
