Favorite Clouser pattern?

Guy’s

Just wondering which on is your personal favorite? I want to tie some and can’t decide what to tie first.
Thanks in advance.
JaPa

Chartreuse over white, without question. Of course, I don’t really know how other colors fish – because that’s about all I’ve got.

This year, I think I might use bead chain eyes mostly. They won’t sink as well, but maybe I won’t get hit so much. I think the bead chain eyes should be enough to get them to invert.

I’ve got three “go to” colors. I list them in my order of preference.

Tan, off-white, or light gray over white

 Chartreuse over white

 Brown over orange

I use very little flash in my Clousers. 8T

JaPa,

Depends on how I’m fishing them.

If I’m working them fast, by far my best colors are chartruese over white and olive over white.

I also use them fished slow with soft rod tips lifts like you’d fish a plastic worm. For that, I like olive or brown.

Good Luck!

Buddy

yellow and orange!!!

Chartreuse over white
Grey over white

Another vote for chartreuse over white. I also use all black, burple (black over purple), olive over yellow and all white. I tie them very sparsely. The brown and orange combo 8Thumbs mentioned sounds like a good one for a crayfish imitation… hmmmm

I haven’t fished ha;f and halfs before, but plan on tying some up this year to try out. They look very fishy to me. I’m also going to try some smaller “clousers” with all marabou and beadchain eyes for crappie.

good luck.

I struggle with tying good Clousers. They always end up looking awkward. Could anyone post a picture or two if you have one handy? (And yes, I know that it is in the fly archives and numerous magazines, but every extra picture helps. )

Chartreuse over white again. 2" to 3" long which are small enough for bluegill but large enough for bass. I tie the small ones with bead chain. I’m thinking about the crawish pattern though.

White over white, white/red, white/pink (works great for stripers/hybrids) white/red and white/chart. Bead chain eyes for shallower water/smaller fish. Great pattern. If I had to pick one color it would be white/chart. Good luck and think flashy.

This is the 2nd time in 2 days I’ve heard someone touting pink over white for stripers / hybrids. The first was from a friend of mine that just caught a lake record, 8.7#, hybrid Friday night. Me thinks I’ll tie some up before my next trip!

Hi warmouth;
I watched Mr Clouser himself this weekend tie his famous fly at a flyfishing show. One thing I learned from watching him is that he pinches the bucktail between his fingers and against the hook with firm pressure whilst tying the material down.

This technique really seemed to keep the material in line!

I to end up with kinda wild looking clousers, but they still look good in the water. I’m going to try being more forcefull in holding the bucktail and see if mine don’t look better.

Hope this helps;

Wayneb

Chartreuse/white and pink/ white have done well, but my go to colors, and one of two go to flies, is black over chartreuse with a little holo-silver flash. Bluegills, sunnies, crappies, and bass all love it.

Thanks for the advice, wayneb! While I’m thinking about it I should just look around online to see if there’s an actual video of him tying the fly.

Warmouth,
Here he is in a 2-parter tying the Clouser, along with a couple of others:

Buy Clousers tying book and you’ll know every nook and cranny of tying a Clouser the way Bob does. It’s a fantastic reference piece.

My favorite type is black over black, it always works very good for me, good luck!

chartruse over white
blck w/ gray over white
both with crystal flash tied into a latteral line

  1. OD Green over white, sometimes with a thin black lateral line.

  2. Chartuese over white.

  3. Black over chartruese over white.

Depends on my target. Walleye it’s white over Crystal Flash over white, with a beadchain. I tie a lot of small Clousers on size 10, quite sparse, really, again with beadchains. And, yes, they do turn over. I find myself moving away from the hourglass weights. I use them more with black Gillbusters (a Clouser tied with a zonker strip, using the same thread color as the strip) than with Clousers. JGW
