extended mayfly body made simple

creating an extended mayfly body:

clamp needle into vise, wax the tip, gently start spinning dubbing around the shaft

stack, then add deer hair, allowing tips to extend past the needle point for tail tips.

build up the body to desired thickness, don’t worry about loose fibers.

apply head cement, don’t be shy, you want to soak deep into the fibers.

using your finger, smooth all loose fibers down.
immediately after, “push” the body off the needle from the side closest to the vise, place the body in pliers, give body desired curve while drying.

this can be found in the spring 2012 Fly Tyer magazine, just thought i would post for those who don’t subscribe to it… hope it helps, and happy tying!

spoof

ps-these help with weight, since they are hollow.

here is a link to a finished fly using the extended body:

Cool; looks like I picked the wrong time to let my subscription to Fly Tyer run out. Thanks for the SBS (and the finished fly from your other thread).

I have always thought it was a pretty cool way of doing these, and it’s the only regret I have about owning a regal vise. It’s tough to do without a true rotary I have found.

Thanks, perfect timing. It is the swap of the month theme.

Using moose main for extended body tied the old fashioned way directly on the size 18 hook.
