This is my first time doing this. I purchased a HP-J5780 All-In-One scanner/printer/fax some time back. I am finally learning how to scan, edit and upload photographic prints. The use of ACDSEE 10 photo editor is a very big help here. It automatically detects the device then steps me through the scanning process.
The following photos were taken in the mid 1980’s with a Pentax K-1000 on Ektachrome film:
6th Air Cavalry Brigade UH-1H “Huey” Iroquois tail numbered 222 (Triple Deuce). At the time of this photo her Crew Chief was my buddy Andre. Later in life, through a wonderful twist of fate, I would get to become best friends with the man that was her Crew Chief in Vietnam:
Triple Deuce:
My own bird, OH-58C Kiowa 71-20426. Also a Vietnam veteran bird. She was the Scout Leader’s bird. We set a record for duration in this bird going 8 months without being grounded for more than 24 hours at a time due to mechanical failure or maintenance:
AH-1S PROD (Production) Cobra. Also another Vietnam veteran bird. This Snake was the Commanding Officer’s bird. “Gunfighter Six” set an endurance record as well. Somebody had to fly guns for that scout.
My roomies Snake:
This is a beautiful bridge over the Brazos River near Waco Texas. It was near Christmas and we waited all day to get just the right light levels for this photo:
Here is a P.R. shot of the same bridge taken years later:
Hope you enjoyed the photos. I apologize for the quality of the scans but I am just starting to learn this scanning stuff. Many thanks to the troopers of the 1/6th Cav, 7/17th Cav and the 6th Air Cavalry Brigade (Attack Helicopter), 1st Cavalry Division and 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (11th A.C.R.). I will never forget you.
Those are great shots…love the head-on shot of the Cobra. I was on one of the teams doing design work on the ill-fated RAH-66 Comanche (I work for a defense contractor). We were doing the 7 conformal fuselage antennas, the IFF system…crypto and transponders. Imagine the shock on our faces that Monday morning when we came to work and were told that the Fed’s stopped the funding on that bird. At least I had the chance to see one of the prototypes over at Boeing. I guess the development was taking way too long…seems like it was going on for 20 yrs. Again, great photos and thanks for your service to this great country of ours.
Hi Betty,
I have a P.C. Here’s what I did. I purchased a software called ACDSee 10 photo editor. It’ son sale right now for 40% off and you can purchase/download it online, no waiting for a disc to arrive in the mail. Any photo editing software should work though. I just happen to like this one even better than Photoshop and it was recommend by PC Photo magazine. Here is their link:
I used the flatbed on my scanner to scan the photos into ACDSee Photo Editor. I then used the software to crop, despeckle, adjust the intensity of the shadows/brightness, sharpen the image, eliminate noise from the photos and then save them to a file on my hard drive.
Then I went online to my photobucket account and downloaded the pictures into my album. I opened each picture individually and clicked the edit tab at the top of the picture. After the new page opened in photbucket I clicked the resize tab and then the bottom arrow on the drop down menu where I clicked on the preset size “Message Board”. I clicked save and had photobucket save my editing as a copy.
Photbucket will then close the editing page, open the picture back up in your album and you just left click on the bottom link under the title “IMG Code - Forums & Bulletin Boards”. Come back to your post on the BB, move your cursor to the place in your thread where you want the image to post, hold the Ctrl key down and hit the “V” key at simultaneously and you will see the IMG text appear for your photo. When you are done typing and posting hit preview and your photos should appear in the preview pane.
It sounds complicated but it’s really not bad once you get going on it. If memory serves you have a Mac and not a P.C.? Joe Valencic is the authority, in my opinion, on both systems but he really knows Mac much better than I do. There may be a different way to do this with a Mac that I am not aware of.
I was only 11 years old when the Embassy fell. However, mine is a military family dating back to colonial times. I remember vividly how my Uncle Lawrence, a United States Marine since early 1950, was treated when he came home that last time from Vietnam in 1972. I remember angry I was, and still am, over how this honorable veteran of two wars was spat upon and called vile, disgusting names.
I remember the day he made his young nephew “Stand Inspection” in his Army Class A’s at Grandma’s house before Christmas dinner. It was the first time the Gunny had seen me after Boot and AIT. He told me about watching those great G.I. Joe’s and Marines die in Korea and Vietnam. I promised him that I would never, ever disgrace my country, the military and the people. I passed Gunny’s inspection. That was the most memorable handshake I ever had. It was also the only time I ever recall seeing my Uncle cry.
I have been to Eustis but never stationed there. All of my Cobra Crew Chief buddies were trained there. all of my training, Crew Chief and AeroScout, was done at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. All Army Aviation training has now been moved to Ft. Rucker and I believe the Army now trains the rotary wing pilots for all of the Armed Forces there.
We need the RAH-66. The Longbow Apache AH-64D is a great attack bird but it needed that Comanche for an armed scout. The Longbow is fast but big, noisy and easy to hit with ground fire. The Kiowa Warrior is, much as I love the Kiowa, just is not up to the task and the new one form Bell is not much better.
There is no sight or sound as dear to me as a Huey on approach with a couple Snakes prowling around the PZ. Almost brings a tear to my eye when I see them.
The new birds may be better, but I just don’t trust them, but then again, I don’t have to.
Good info on the scans. I’ve been meaning to try scanning some stuff but shooting a qiuick pic was just too easy for me.
