Got out for the first time this year which has been the earliest ive ever been out for warm water species. It was cold and drizzly with several inches of snow still on the ground. Tried the Clinton River at Dodge Park and with in the first 20 minutes or so I got into a couple pike and had a couple decent rips which I could only assume were pike. I was using a deep water clouser brown over white with a little flash of green in the center fished very slow. Fish seem to in the back water eddie areas where there wasnt a lot of current, actually there was no currrent at all. Definintly try this stretch again as it gets a little warmer.

Thanks! I never thought of Iowa as southern or temperate!!! lol But I guess Hidehunter and I are in southern Iowa. Great pics and great job. Have not caught a pike on a fly yet.
Awesome pike fishing from Dodge Park down to the old Kilno rd bridge, they have a nice parking area just off Clinton river rd at the old bridge. If you start there and head toward Dodge Park you will find plenty of back water eddie on that stretch. When I was a kid I had traps set from Utica to Kilno rd and I knew every hole on that river at one time, but as you know the river changes over 30 plus years. You should check out Yates cider mill for the steelies that time of the year, I will be heading there next week when I come in town for the Midwest Fly Fishing show.
popperfly, You’ll have to send me directions to the old kino bridge, not sure where that is. They have been picking up a few steehead by yates and down river from yates but its hit or miss. Ive flyfished for 30 plus years and never caught a trout in MI. lol
Now I’m jealous. I love “The Great Northern Pike” (showing my age aren’t I ;)). I want to catch a pike on the fly so bad I can taste it. We have a few down here, in the rivers, but not hardly enough to be fishable. Congrats - Stay on 'em.
