I lust for one of those fancy schmancy Dyna King head cement holders made of machined aluminum but I wonder about evaporation.
Anybody out there have one and what do you think? Every bottle with an affixed bodkin I’ve ever tried dries out a lot quicker than a regular capped bottle.
However…there is one thing I’ll say before you fill it…Take your time…get the cement just so it leaves a drop on the needle…or…when you pop the sealed bodkin out of the lid…You will get a slosh…and a mess…I also do not push the bodkin all the way in…just so the O-ring is fully inside the Delrin Bushing… They are nice!!! Mine fits perfectly in the front divided tray of my Oasis Fly Factory Bench!!! Nothing could be sweeter!
I had one. What I liked was that it was a 1 hand operation. You can pull the bodkin out already loaded with cement - with 1 hand.
My friend, however, gave me the look - what the h did you get that for? The story:
My sister went into a fly shop - looking for a Christmas gift. She told the guy that I probably have everything.
He said, “we guarantee he doesn’t have one of these”.
In short, it was nice - but I wouldn’t spend the money on it myself.
I transfer my cement into a small nail polish bottle ( cut off the brush part) This reduces the volume so I don’t have as big of a mess if I spill and slows the evaporation rate. I then took a synthetic wine cork and shaped it into a small stopper with sand paper. I use this cork/bodkin cap while tying, and use the threaded cap for overnight.
I push my bodkin through just far enough to get the right size drop when capped. Taking a tip from A.K. Best I use a dap of florists putty to stick the bottle to my desk and keep it from getting knocked over.
After reading about the head cement system A.K. Best uses, I not only couldn’t find anything wrong with it, I couldn’t think of or find anything ‘better’, cheaper, easier, or more efficient.
So, after trying everything ESLE for a year or so because it CAN’T be that SIMPLE, I decided to give up reinventing the wheel and do it the ‘AK’ way.
Works. No more mess, just the right amount of cement EVERY time. Adjustment is almost idiot proof (dang needle is SHARP, don’t push it against your palm to adjust…). AND, the cement is cheap and the viscosity is easily adjusted as required…
Right now I just use a Renzetti bottle with the attached bodkin top but I have a plain cap that I put on after my tying session to keep evaporation to a minimum. I only use the plastic cone cap do-hickey with the bodkin attached when I’m tying and I cap it when I’m done.
I have that bottle and another brand of cement stuck to the bottom of a 2" X 2" X 1" clear plastic box with poster putty to keep it from tipping over. It works fine for me, I was just looking for an excuse to buy one of the DK gadgets.
If you like the Dyna King cement holder buy one they are very well made and should last you a life time.
I have tied for a living for many years and have found this bottle to be the best thing to use. It puts one drop right were you want it and works on all sizes of flies. The needle that is used as the stopper is great for clearing the eye if you should get any head cement in it while using the bottle. I have tried just about all the others and for this price you can’t go wrong. The head cement does not dry out as fast as it does in other holders either. Ron
