Terrific, Scott.
How do you attach the foam to the front section of the mono? Super glue it like the back section? Also, do you use hackle that is undersized since the “post” is so large?
Again, excellent fly as always.
Nice job on the fly, but a couple things bother me. Maybe you can clarify. First of all, there is no mention of the size hook you used. You foam body appears to be much bulkier than the Duckworth body that can be made for various sized flies. I doubt that foam can be easily used to tie the small versions of the fly. Secondly, Duckworth ties the hackle to the hook at a much earlier stage than you. It’s not clear to me how you are tying in the hackle. Seems a little late in the assembly for good stem security. Please comment. Thanks
I used the tag end of the first part of the rear body wrap. Fixed that in the instructions; thanks for catching that. The hackle is sized to the hook (#10); normally I oversize by 1 on parachutes, but, as you pointed out, the base is thick enough that larger hackle isn’t needed.
It’s a size 10, as noted in the recipe
Actually it can; take a look at the Rusty Spinner
This one’s tied on a #16, an 18 would be no problem; I would just use a thinner diameter mono core and stretch the underlayer of foam a little more. The outer layer will provide all the floatation needed.
I tied the hackle in after the wing was folded back and before I dubbed the thorax (didn’t take a picture). It’s quite secure, locked in by the thread wraps and dubbing.
Thanks, Scott, but I wasn’t clear asking my question. What I meant was do you put super glue on the “head” portion of the mono before wrapping the foam (like on the body section) to keep it from slipping or do you just wrap the foam up and back on the mono and tie it off and it stays put?
