Cabelas sent me what looks like an encyclopedia. It’s a hard backed catalogue and has tabs for the various sections such as fishing, camping, hunting, boating etc. No telling what it cost to make. It’s really nice. It got me to thinking “maybe this is a sign that I just may be spending more of my income on the outdoors than I realized”.

I recieved one last year, did not get one this year.
My dad has gotten two.
It’s a sure bet that I’ll never get the hardcover, but then I’m lucky to have several flyshops within a 100 mile radius & it’s a “no-brainer” where my business goes!
That IS a nice reward for a high level of business, though. Are they “keepsakes”??

For several years, my dad had received the hardcover book, and razzed me about it. Last year, I got one and he did not. Fun payback! However, this year I have not received one.
As a marketing person, I would be interested in knowing what the criteria is to recieve one. It must be somehow related to purchases, but I spent more in the 12 months after receiving the hardcover than I did in the 12 months prior.

I refuse to buy into the proposition that there is the possibility that anyone can have too much flyfishing equipment. When I was struggling with this notion several years ago I found out that it made it much easier for me psychologically, if I viewed myself as a collector rather than an consumer. Now I collect flyfishing equipment without guilt and openly welcome the multitude of catalogs to my mailbox, whatever form they come in.
I guess I need to spend more money with Cabelas, I have not entered the hardback catalog club yet.

Thank you for the sage advice. I think what I needed was an “attitude adjustment” similar to yours. Now I feel a whole lot better knowing I’m a “collector”. The guilt has been removed. Muchas gracias, senor.
a month ago I placed another order and asked about the catalogs among other things and she that they ship them out randomly to their customers she said I could purchase one this year but I said no thanks. They sure are nice!

I don’t think the hard-cover catalog is the best sign that you are spending too much on fishing equipment though the evidence clearly points in that direction. You know that you are spending too much when you go to your local Cabela’s and they have a 15 foot bronze statue of you in front of their main store entrance. Macy’s has actually honored my wife in exactly this way. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
