Thanks for the back up on SA making the line. 8)
I do have SYLK both WF and DT. I love it and the fact that it too is a smaller diameter is awesome on smaller rods. I will say however that I noticed that people that live in very Humid places think the line gets a bit sticky. I have never noticed it but read about this a lot.
I do agree AIRFLO is a FANTASTIC line. Like the Superfine, you don’t hear much about it, which is strange because it is such a sweet line. My new Type VII is Airflo. Smooth and very soft.
I also agree that you will be spending about $10. more for Orvis line. Good line but there is a lot of Good lines to choose from now and the average price is less than Orvis.
Gramps, no offense, but real silk line like Phoenix or Terenzio is a p.i.a. There’s a reason today’s lines outperform silk in more ways than one.
I know silk is traditional but…
I have the Orvis No Sink line in a 5w. So far this spring and summer- no sink.
I also think the rod determines what line is best for it.
Flyandtie why do you think DT works better on your 3w?
i like the dt and so does my three weight.
because, on the double taper, it roll casts better at longer distances. big plus with the lighter rods.
and the extra length of line with no taper helps the rod load and is more delicate.
i use WF on all my other rods. not a three weight because WF are for more distance than the DT and if you need a WF on a three weight to cast farther, you are trying to hard to get distance with it and you need to be stepping up to a 4-5 weight not a three.
and its my PERSONAL PREFERENCE. enough said.
I use WF (SUPERFINE and SYLK) on both my 2wt and my 3wt. Like you said a personal Preference. I have DT and TT for both, but I PERSONALLY find WF more effortless.
I notice a lot of people back East prefer DT. (I know you are in CA f&t). I bought DT to see how it was on my BOOS and it is okay and I do use it, but still prefer my WF.
The TT works great on my little 5 1/2’ glass however.
Had I known before I bought the Wonderline I would have checked-out the Superfine. Note to myself - in the future check with FG before making an Orvis purchase.
Other than less maintenance. How do todays plastic lines out perform a Phoenix silk line?
Just me, but I think Maintenance is a great big part of a fly line. I have tried a silk and while being super nice, I have tried some of the new lines that lay out just as purdy.
I was Orvis all the way, but lately I am leaning more towards RIO and AIRFLO.

I will answer, but it is JUST MY FEELINGS, that is all.
I think silk line was great for it’s day. They are way over priced for what they are and I still feel there is a lot of pvc lines out there that will do the same thing, but do not require any maintanence other than a wet wipe down occassionally. Plus, the moss doesn’t stick to PVC lines.
Again, just my feeling and I have tried silk or I would not attempt to judge. I am the first to try anything at least once LOL
Have you tried Superfine? It is very thin and soft and does everything you said, but is at least 1/3 the price.
When you have several rods and different action, weight, and lengths, this means a lot. I live in Utah and fish my home waters Idaho, so I understand casting into the wind.
Explain how a plastic line that is smaller than the normal plastic line float better? How can it be smaller and the same weight, but float better? The only reason a silk floats better is because you treat it with Mucilin. I don’t have to tell you that, but you’re acting like you don’t know.
If you can’t afford to buy silk for all your setups that’s a good reason. However, don’t say plastic will perform everything the same. I even question the cost savings over 20 years. The silk will still be going strong. How many plastics will you have to buy?
btw When you say the Superfine is smaller. It’s smaller compared to other plastics. It’s not small like silk.

Gramps, you are kinda making this Damned if I do and Damned if I don’t.
I don’t care for SILK it is not worth the price to me. Superfine IS a smaller diameter and it DOES float with NO MUCLIN. I have been fly fishing the better part of my life and Have tried all sorts of equipment.
Grew up with the Snake for a back yard and a Grandfather and Mother that fished to live, so I am familiar with SILK trust me.
Times changed and there is more to offer now and LORDY some of it is GOOOOD!
I am glad you like you new hex rod and your silk line and you choice to wet fly only (TRADITIONAL) but there are many of us out here that don’t share that with you. Doesn’t mean we’re wrong or ignorant, or anything else other than HUMAN.

You’re being stubborn. How I fish has absolutely nothing to do with this. I’m not sure why you even brought it up, or your experience. We’re just talking about does a silk line do some things better than any plastic on the market right now? I say it still holds an edge in some things.
Of course the Superfine floats. It wouldn’t be worth spit if it didn’t. It floats like all plastic line. In the film. Not on the surface. It disturbs the water more when lifted off than a line that’s floating on the surface. If you have some proof that this isn’t true. I’d love to see it?
I would hope that you would agree that if you shoot two lines through the air with the same force the line with the smaller diameter will go farther. Do you agree?
I do agree that a thinner line will shoot better. I agree that your silk is on top of the water.
Does this mean more fish, No, does it mean silk is all around better NO. Does it mean it is more easy to cast and will make you a better fisherman, NO. Does it mean it will make you appreciate fishing more NO.
Again, silk is all there was in the old days, but there are thousands of choices today for each indivitual.
Do I think Silk is better than Superfine…No. It all comes down to LEADERS and fly choice.
Ok, I finally got a direct answer from you. Of course you got off track again, but that’s your style.
My only point in this whole debate is that silk has certain advantages over any present plastic lines. You didn’t want to admit that, but finally did. Does lifting softer and casting father mean you’ll catch more fish you say? I don’t know, but it might, but that wasn’t the issue. Performance was the issue.
Silk is expensive? Yes, but in the long run. Not so much. It last much longer.
Silk has more maintenance? Yes, but with a line dryer it adds maybe two minutes to your fishing.
Silk has some performance advantages over plastic? Yes.
