Doc Spratley (variation) SBS

Another stillwater pattern, thought to be the invention of an American dentist who frequently fished the lakes of British Columbia in the early part of the 1900’s. Like the original, this one’s got a hook, thread and peacock; mass substitutions everywhere else.

hook - Mustad 9671 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
underbody - non-tox .015
tail - mearns quail
rib - mylar silver
body - ostrich herl olive
throat - mearns quail
wing - pheasant rump dyed olive
head - peacock herl

Part 1

cover front 1/2 of hook with non-tox; start thread, cover underbody, tie in rib and wrap to bend

measure (gap width past bend) some quail fibers; tie in/trim

tie in rib

tie in some ostrich herl; wrap to 2/3 mark, tie off/trim

counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

Part 2

tie in quail by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

stroke fibers down/back, cover with thread

trim out center of rump feather, measure (tips to 1/2 tail), tie in/trim

tie in peacock

twist with thread

wrap, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN
