Each of us knows of a place (or several) where deep discounts on materials and equipment can be found.
I think it would benefit everyone on the site if we could post locations that have SERIOUSLY good prices, not just an okay or acceptable price.
For example, round rubber legs are nowhere cheaper than jannsnetcraft.com. You can save up to 70% over other suppliers prices.
Mustad hooks are nowhere cheaper than hookhack.com (because of a 20% on line ordering discount).
Tapered leaders are never cheaper than DaiRiki leaders for 79 cents (when they are available) at sierratradingpost.com.
Okay, that starts the thread with three REALLY discounted items.
Whose got others?
Hey there Coach.
Your thread should go over like a pregnant pole vaulter. This site ( and I speak ONLY my opinion) is supported by SPONSORS who pay for exposure to the subscribers herein. It just ain’t courteous to mention other NON sponsors even innocently. I understand your motive BUT …
Didja happen to notice hook & hackle is one of my noted discount sites?
Sponsors should not be afraid of knowing when the competition is beating them a prices.
I had a shop in the 90s that went the way of many small shops when the mega-sellers came around. But I know of plenty of shops that are still hanging in there because their quality of goods and because of customer service.
I will pay more for good customer service. But I still would like to know how much more.
Remember too, those discount places don’t ‘make’ anything. They are actually a valuable outlet for a manufacturer. It allows them to "dump’ discontinued or out of date things, or whatever, to make room for the new stuff they make. Sure, they may not ‘make’ as much on the things, but it gets ‘gone’ and turns some dollars.
Sure, without YOUR support of our sponsors, they won’t support us, and so on,
Many of the Sponsors of this site are manufacturers, they are supported when their products are purchased at a discount as well as when purchased at the local fly shop.
Big Bad Wulff’s Redington is an example, sponsor bought at big box outdoor is is still a sponsor supported.
In his Original post Coach Bob listed two sponsors Mustad and HookandHackle.
I try to support sponsors but will still shop for the best deal on their products
You can blame my Yankee heritage but I never buy anything that’s not a bargain. That means I don’t necessarily buy to support the sponsors here but it very often works out that way
For example, I’ve been a customer of H&H since the early '80s. Long before the internet or FAOL
It was the place to buy fly lines cheap, among other things
You can still get some good bargains there
Other places I like to shop include the local club sponsored fly shows in the winter
You’re not only supporting local shops that offer some incredible deals, but you’re also supporting the clubs that put on the show
At one show last year I purchased a spare spool ($15). some hook 100 packs ($5 each) and a reel seat/grip combo ($10), among other things
I agree with supporting the Sponsors here but I won’t feel bad posting a link to another place on the boards here BECAUSE I recommend FAOL and many of it’s sponsors on many boards on the internet and not just fly fishing and tying. I’m not a purist fly fisher and still cast paint and tie crappie and bass jigs and when others are looking for fly tying lessons I recommend Al’s series and equipment/tying supplies I recommend sponsors here.
