All of you veteran tyers prob have heard of these, but I visited my dentist today and he was using these. I mentioned they might have a fly tying application, and he said he uses them when he ties all the time
I hear they’re pretty pricey, but haven’t ever checked it out for sure.
Kelly.
I’ve been thinking about these too and was curious if anyone else had used them. They seem like they would cost a lot. Anyone looked into the pricing or recs for brands? I thought about looking for used ones too but haven’t done it yet.
way to expensive for my fly tying
Dang, pricey little things!!!
Just think about all the tying materials you can buy for the price of that fancy toy I know how to skin that cat…Go to Walmart, buy some reading glasses and tape a flashlight to your hat
Now your tying in style…lol
Popperfly,
Don’t even have to tape on the flashlight. They make these cute little LED lights that fit right onto the bill of your hat. Very bright, less that $10 (some less than $5).
Buddy
Thats right Buddy, they are called “CAT EYES” correct???
Popperfly,
I’m not aware of any particular brand names and I’ve not heard the term ‘cat eyes’ applied to them, although from distance they might look like that…I’ve seen these at the sporting goods stores, fly shops, WalMart, Harbor Freight, etc… Of course the price is less at the last two.
Some have one light, I’ve seen up to four. Some even have adjustable brightness controls (nice because they are REALLY bright).
Simple concept that works. I’d not use if for tying. I have plenty of light over my tying station (maybe more than plenty, I like lots of light), but these things are real handy at dusk/dawn on the stream/lake for tying flies to tippets.
Good Luck!
Buddy
I got a small unit from Hobby Lobby and my problem is I try to look thru it like a riflescope with one eye closed then I have all sorts of issues getting my hands and eyes to communicate! I think if I could see more of the area as this unit has a small ( 3") magnifier I may have better luck but for $30 I thought it couldn’t hurt. I need to play more with it and see if I can get it figured out as I’m starting to tie smaller flys now I just need to figure out how to get my fat fingers to hold the materials when working with the #20 hooks Later,
Kirk
Dental loupes are of high optical quality, and work great for their intended purpose. But the field of view is pretty limited. I’m always looking around my bench for tools or materials, and high magnification would give me a headache in the first ten minutes.
Chuck
The pair that my dentist uses cost $500.00
