Deerstalker River Fly SBS

A tyer on the U.K. Forum showed me this pattern, similar in body construction to the Michigan style. His had a thorax of trimmed black hackle, which I subbed with clipped deer hair. Since this was just testing out a concept, i didn?t add a wing; may add one of poly yarn. Don?t think I can get this to work on small stuff but it might be useful for bigger drakes and Hex.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - UTC 140 black
tail - moose body hair
body - deer hair
rib - tying thread
Thorax - deer hair dark dun
hackle - grizzly

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of moose; tie in/trim

clean, stack, measure (tips just past bend) a clump of deer hair; trim butts, tie in with 2 soft loops, let it surround shank without releasing tips

spiral thread to bend

pull tight to flare tips, then spiral back, crossing previous wraps

tie in hackle

create thread loop

Part 2

clean, stack (by butts) a clump of deer hair; insert in clip, trim, insert in loop spin

wrap deer hair, tie off/trim

wrap hackle thru thorax; tie off/trim half hitch x 2, SHHAN

trim out hackle underneath

Scott

Alternate tying sequence; easier and a bit cleaner looking

Tail?s tied in (same as before)

Clean, stack a clump of deer hair; trim tips, tie in

Trim

Create body (as before)

Hackle, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Scott

Scott,
Thanks for another great looking pattern and a SBS to demystify it. I would not have figured out the deer hair thorax without your explanation.
Thanks,
Ted
