I recently acquired a pack of Deer Hair Zonker Strips, does anyone know any patterns that uses it?
Deer Hair Zonker strips? Definitely one of the oddest materials I’ve heard of in recently memory.
Did a quick web search and discovered that you weren’t kidding. The only reference I found for this product mentions using the strips for 'fast mouse patterns." I assume that means you could use it as you would use a rabbit strip when tying a bunny leech. Spiral the strip around a healthy size hook and then trim to shape.
Not quite sure why this is so much better than just spinning/stacking deer hair and one would think the tanned hide would just add unnecessary bulk, but I guess if you are in a hurry it would save some time.
I would be interested to know if it floats. The hair obviously does, but if the waterlogged hide is to much weight. Could make a nice surface snake or eel pattern that sits at or just under the surface.
i would try wrapping it around the entire hookshank, as you would with chennile, and then trimming it as you woud with a muddler head. try to trim a minnow shape. should work…
