I was trying to get a quick meal of bluegills last night when I caught more bass than bluegills. No monsters but a couple were probably over the states min. size limit. I think my fly may have been a little to big though it did eliminate the small fry as it was intended to do. For those who like that kind of problem I was using a beadhead black wooly bugger with two sets of chartreuse rubber legs on a four times long no. ten hook.
Maybe the gills were afraid of your fly, ha.
Catching fish is much better than not catching fish, right? Did you still manage to get your meal?
I ended up with enough for a meal if not as many as I’d hoped for. I went back last night and did better. Also got some more bass including a couple that were definitely over 14". Using a lead eyed marabou damsel this time as the wooly bugger was not in good shape any more.
Reminds me of fishing with my brother (in law, but we’re closer buddies with each other than with our “born” siblings).
We were fishing for Bluegill one time in the mid 1980s in early spring at a small lake in Oklahoma where trout had apparently been stocked for fall and winter fishing.
All we were catching early were 10 to 12 inch Bass (which are not the opposite of fun on a 3 or 4 weight) and then he caught a 12 inch stocker Rainbow.
He got a disgusted look on his face and muttered out loud “damn trash fish!” We laughed a long time after that and I still laugh about that decades later. Guess it’s all about what you’re expecting or hoping for.
We’ve NEVER had a bad time fishing together.
