Anyone fly fish the salt on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina?
I would appreciate any info on specific locales, flies. etc.
Have access to a 21’ and 26’ center console this fall and would love to give it a try.
Would also like to do some wet fishing, if that’s a possibility.
Our base will be the Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, and Morehead City area.
I remember reading about a club, which was based out of Morehead City if I recall correctly, that would go out during the Bonita run and absolutely slaughter the fish on a fly rod. Talk to some of the local shops to find out when that run is and then look for the birds.
sandfly pointed you in the right direction. Hit the false albacore run right and you’ll never be the same; standing up in the bow, watching albies crash balls of bay anchovies, bait flying everywhere, birds diving, laying a cast in that turmoil, feeling the thump of a strike and then watching the line and backing disappear in a tunny melt - nothing else even comes close.
Harker’s Island is the center of a lot of the fishing but you can get there from your base. 1st weekend in November, Tom Earnhart hosts (at least he used to; think it’s still happening) a pig roast at his house in Harker’s that is definitely worth going to.
This is the first year that we didnt go—but there is time left (ive gone as late as thanksgiving) Clousers tied on 3 extraheavy hooks–10 wt rods–look up snotflies when they are sipping–Gummy minnows work if you get them with brownish backs–we always stayed at the Inlet Inn and ate at the Grocery in Beaufort. We fished with Capt Dean Lamont just over the causeway to Atlantic Beach
