Craven's Screaming Banshee

Another cool fly from Charlie Craven (even if he ties everything backwards). Can’t wait to try this one out.

here’s his tutorial

When I first saw this pattern, I was and still am right there with you being excited about trying it out. It’s similar to the Splitsville Caddis without the paraloop hackle and will skate much better, I think, with the “planing wing”. But being not so good with deer and elk hair, I substituted poly yarn for the forward wing/shellback. After propping up the poly yarn forward wing, I post it with a couple of wraps before thinning the back part and wrapping it to the back of the hook. I hope it keeps its ability to skate and, at least for me, will be more durable.

How about a picture, Joe?

Sorry the picture quality is so bad.

Joe

Sorry the picture quality is so poor.

Joe

It’s more about the quality of the fly. Nice tie, Joe.

First try at a few mods; 1mm foam back and glued/squeezed/trimmed deer hair butts (from the wing) for the lip/forward wing

Looking forward to watching Charlie tie at the Guadalupe River TU’s Troutfest in Sattler, TX, Feb 21-23. I’ve been a fan for years and have yet to meet him.

We had him as our featured tyer for the Texas FlyFishers Annual Dr. Ed Rizzolo Fly Tying Festival back on Feb. 1st and he did a great job. You’ll enjoy his presentations.

ITR put together a decent video; found it over on Frankenfly

Great variation, Scott!

Like Joe, tying in that much hair is a pain for me.

Did you consider forming the lip from the foam back? Gurgler style.

Bruce,

I’ll give it a shot - the 1mm foam may be a bit floppy, but if I double it back on itself, that should give it enough body.

Scott
