I first saw this pattern a number of years ago in Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine, without a tutorial. It is by Colorado tier Eric Pettine and the fly reminded me of some off-the-wall soft hackle that I had tied up for the water pictured below, quite some time ago. That one employed partridge for the hackle, a copper bead behind it, light olive thorax, rusty brown abdomen with a copper brown, wire rib. It was the only pattern that consistently took fish when the water in here was raging from bank to bank.
The “Cowdung Variant” is Tim Barker’s second contributiong to FAOL’s Fly Of the Week. Tim’s other contribution is the “Slope Caddis” (September 12th 2010). Both are excellent fly patterns to be used on any open water… ~Parnelli

Nice fly! bet the trout think it is an emerging caddis. Is the 16/0 Tiemco thread pretty stong?

The Timeco 16/0 thread is very strong for it’s denier and lays flat, off the spool…I just received a selection of additional spools to use for Midges and some Spring patterns I will be working on…
