Cortland 444 Clear Intermediate

I just purchased the above line that was on sale.
I don’t know if I really needed it but the price was right.
It’s a Clear,WF5, Type 2, sink rate 1.5-2.0 ips.

What would be the most appropriate type of leader to connect to it?

-a short piece of straight mono, 3-5’
-a short piece of fluorocarbon, 3-5’
-a 9’ mono tapered leader
-a 9’ fluorocarbon tapered leader
or any other suggestions.

I’m basically fishing streams, maximum depth 12’.
I thought that I would try the “camo” approach since the most of the streams are heavily fished and the trout are very wary and spooked easily.

BTW Type 2 is not I…just a FYI in case you didn’t know.

If you are fishing Streamers I would go with straight Flurocarbon, anything else and I’d go with a tapered leader.
All the best.
Mike

Mono floats and floro sinks and with a sink tip, well…

Unless they made a printing error on the box, it states, “quote”,
Clear(Claire) Intermediate Rocket Taper (Moyen Fusee Fuseau)
Type 2, 1.5-2.0 ips
WF 5 I

If a type 2 is not an Intermediate line, what is it?

Thank-you, Mike!

I used the clear intermediate for several years but have switched over to the camo intermediate. Less memory than the clear; you’ll need to stretch it and get the coils out before each use. I fish it with a 7 1/2 foot 2x floro and find that setup works fine.

H Supersenior, I think Ducksterman is refering to sink rates, most manufacturers class Type 2 lines as slow sinkers rather than Intermediates. Every company seems to have their own definition when it comes to naming the line.
If you put a Poly leader on the end of your line you can change the poly leader to achieve just about any depth you need to fish at. With that line and a fast sinking poly leader you will get deep or if the fish are up near the top you might want a floating or intermediate poly leader. I always add a few feet of Flourocarbon tippet to the end of my Poly leaders.
You will need to give the fly line a good stretch before you start fishing everytime as the clear lines do seem to have a bit of a memory problem.
All the best.
Mike.

Thanks,Grizzly Wulff for the info.
and
Thanks again ,Mike for the added info.

I think that I’m all set to fish!

Fluorocarbon is less visible underwater. If the fish are spooky, that’s where I would start.

From the Cortland website…

444 Classic - Clear Camo

The 444 Clear Camo is the top choice for Stillwater anglers all over the world. The super stealthy "clear camo" blends into any sub-surface environment to virtually disappear in the water and will not distort the water surface. The slowest full sinking line on the market with a sink rate of 1.5 - 2 IPS. This allows the fly to stay in the feeding zone longer than any other line. The 444 Clear Camo is ideal for the shallow water conditions and spooky fish. This super supple line will remain supple in the coldest conditions.
