Chenille Stems?

Has anyone used chenile stems (from the craft store, they are like pipe cleaners, chenile material strung on wire instead of thread)

Just wondering… I bought some but havent tried it… it would be like using weighted chenile, but I am worried they will rust…

We’ll see…

Pipe cleaners rust BAD so I have a feeling those will too.

:frowning:

The quality of that chenille I would think is much less than the chenille like Danville makes. I know several guys that got some of that to tie jigs and soon discovered they couldn’t make it look as good either.

I have no personal experience with that though and always just use tying chenille.

IMO,
that stuff sucks. I bought some a long time ago because they had multi-colored ones. Black/orange, Gold/balck, zebra, etc. I tied one fly with it that actually caught one of the biggest Blue Gill I’ve ever seen, but the wire is thick that it’s extremely hard to wrap and work with. I gave the rest to my wife for her nursery class in church cause it just didn’t cut it for flies.

Yes they rust, yes they can be used.

I like to use the metalic ones for weight and sparkle as the thorax/body with a soft hackle over the top for bass and bluegills.

Because they rust, I keep them in a separate fly box and consider them one-outing flies.
