Cheapskate's Club

While perusing the boards I have seen many recommendations for Sally Hansen Hard as Nails so I thought the next time I went to Walmart I would pick some up and try it. On my recent outing I stopped first at Dollar General where I found the aforementioned product, two bottles for $2.50. I think I have enough for awhile, and at a fraction of what Wallyworld wanted.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size=“1” face=“Verdana, Arial”>quote:</font><HR>I made my wife worry about me today… took a trip to the grocers and picked up some glycerin, 4 kg bag unscented non-clumping cat litter, and 3 litres scent free detergent. Now I’m mashing up the litter while having smokes out on the front porch.

What in the Heck are you doing with that stuff? Surely you are not mixing it all together and putting it in pipes for the ‘extra special’ fishing trip are you?

I am making leader sinkant/deglinter the old fashion way

Cheap cat litter is made of a clay called fuller’s earth. Newer clumping cat litter is made of a different type of clay.

A thick paste of fuller’s earth, detergent and glycerine will remove grease/oil/etc from your leader and reduce the water’s surface tension. This lets it sink quickly which is important when you have 15+ft leaders for stillwater. The fuller’s earth also dulls the surface of your leader which removes the glint.

The only problem with the cat litter is that you have to crush it to a powder, which is messy so I do it outside when I go for smokes.

Got it. Thanks for the explanation!

All I’d have to do is put some in a baggie and let my kids play with it and it would soon be powder. Of course it would also be all over the house. . .

And I tought I was the only one Raising
Labradubbing. Three colors of Lab dubbing,
a grey cat, and a cream colored sheperd across the street.
Them critters lovs to be brushed!!!

Bluegill Budd- you can’t forget the black nail polish and other punk colors only fit for flies. I’ve got some metallic army green, some yellow and some black that make excellent frog colored popper paint. Pale metallic blue for damselflies. Gunmetal grey for minnow backs. Red is multipurpose -toenails and gills. White too, for french manicures and eyes.

I rarely have painted nails, but if I buy it, it saves my husband the funny looks he’d get at the store. For a nominal fee, I could provide this service to you .

Went to a store in Iowa with my daughter so she could buy college supplies and things for her dorm room. I found a box with a total of 100 fake fingernails, perfect for my fingernail flies. Cost was about 4 bucks.
At the register, the clerk pointed out that my daughter didn’t need the fake nails as hers’ were so pretty.
My daughter just told her they were for her me. Clerk looked at me kinda funny. I could only guess that they don’t tie to many fingernail flies in central Iowa.

Frank, You are probably on some kind of watch list now

Watch out for the balck helicopters…

  1. For white streamers you can’t beat chest hair from a Collie or Sheltie.
  2. The little sandpaper “emery” boards make handy dubbing teasers.
  3. The longer corsage pins make good bodkins.
  4. Contact cement, like Pliobond, is great for bonding up mottled feather fibers for nymph wingcases.

Spent 23 years in the Air Force launching the black helicopters. Them’s me buddies and they be crazier than me. Oh, hold on, uh, “I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of black helicopters. If you would like more information, please contact public affairs.”

Cheap … how about … innovative …

pet Chinchilla’s shed underfur for dubbing. Nice smoked grey color.
Dried branch of apple tree stained. Added wire from Chin’s broken running wheel. Ground to fine point for bodkin.
Golden retrievers’ shed winter fur for LT yellow coarse dub.
Old automotive wire for copper ribs.
Bunjee cords for rubber legs.
Old pen holder made in military basic. Added 2 xacto handles where pens go, & a couple set-screws - for 1st tying vice. Works great.
Freezer zip-loc bags (thick blue ones) for body wrap.
Embroidery thread for nymph bodies (quite the buggy colors).
Cotton darning chord.
35mm film containers for dubbing mixs - carrying flies.
Old leather jacket for leech strips.
best one for last … belly-button lint dubbing.

… I’m sure I have some more … before anyone tosses stuff out now its ‘Hey, can you use any of this for tying?’ …

ok yea I’m late reading this BUT was handed a 5 pound bag of Lama fleece in a plastic garbage bag from a friend who owns lamas and shears for spinning.Hows that for a dubbing stock (if I can get it away from wifes spinning wheel) under fur from my bassets brush real fine. and cardnal feathers from a catkill out of my back yard (neighbors soon decessed cat)also several bluejay feathers and blackbird feathers picked up while walking afore mentioned 80lb puppy.ohhhhhh yea he likes coffee with cream thank GOD for decaf. Mallard tail and wing feathers yesterdays walk (road kill)
Is the best still bag it,tag it and add mothballs for bug infestation prevention or has there been a change.

If there were a trout stream nearby I would just soak my head as hot as its been

FAOL instead of six $19.95 subscriptions to trout-heavy magazines. In other words, no warmwater stories. This frees up almost $120 for another blank or two, which is another way of saving money. Okay, JC and LF, the check for Friends of FAOL is in the mail. JGW

Now that you mention it, the $25 Friends of FAOL really is a bargin.

It’s stamped. It’s into the box. It’s on the way. Now, aren’t you happy about starting a warmwater thread for us? We are. JGW

Starting the Warm Water section sort of fell into the classification of just being the right thing to do. We do love you all (and I’m not a southerner).
