Cheap Vise

I have made fly tying vices from X-acto knife handles, old files, hinges, flat stock of mild steel, clothes pins and can openers.

They all hold a hook.

PM me if you are thinking of building one.

Doug;
After you make your new vise, what are you going to do with the 3 extra hubcaps, on your rig? Gonna look kinda “odd” with only three, ain’t it? Heck, why not just get some bigger washers and run your vise base through one of the lug-nut holes on your rig’s spare tire? Throw THAT baby, up on your tying bench and she won’t move around I bet!
“A hubcap, filled with cement”, geee… I bet that little number hardly scratches up a table top, ya’ thunk?
Oh, by the way… since Linda’s already got you “on her list” for your previous “goat comments”, I went ahead and told her it was YOUR IDEA that I gut out her blender, (it was less than a month old), and filled the base with gravel to make my own vise base, per your article.
You might, while on your walks, start collecting cardboard boxes for your “move”. She’ll be in Portland next week sometime for a meeting.

A whole spare tire? that’s silly

But I have contemplated a stainless steel kitchen sink with water to keep live mayfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae and a leech or two, to observe while I design and tie flies.

The hubcap has shelf liner on the bottom to save the table top, also the concrete is recessed.

The old truck only had 2 hubcaps to begin with and when it went off to the junkyard it was down to one.

On the car theme though, I did make a vise using a brake rotor for the base.

My clothespin vise can be found at:

What do you think of this for a Vise Base?;http://www.hubcapmike.com/53-54-55-olds-wheel-covers.html

These might be better choices for the long run:

Review of vises under $50.

I personally bought a Dan-vise off of Ebay for under $50 and haven’t looked back.

Rick

you could even get spinner hubcaps and have “DOUBLE ROTARY”! Then and only then would you be STYLIN’!
