Caught 4 species on flies

Got permission to fish a pond. Grass had been cut and was baled. I could drive to about 12 feet from the pond. I had loaded the canoe the night before and all the rest of the stuff that I take.

Got out on the pond and started casting. Had a Hares ear type fly and an Only on. Cast both of these and picked up a few nice gills. Headed to the dam end of the pond as there was a slight breeze. This would let me cast into the breeze and retrieve the flies back.

Picked up a few more gills here and got a few nice bass. Moved to the south a little and tried again. I know there is some deeper water here. The bottom slopes down for about and 6 feet and the drops off. I wanted to bring some flies along this break line.

Got a few more gills and a nice crappie here. Made another cast and let the fly drop deeper. Got a solid hit and had something with shoulder on the line. After a long time I had a 5 lb channel cat in hand. Theland owner has asked that all the catfish be returned to the pond.

Moved up the break line to try again. Got anchored and noticed there was a big fin up in the weeds along the shore. Grabbed the rod with the Hares ear type fly on it and put it about a foot in front of where I though the fish was going. Took a minute or so before I saw the line move. When I set the hook the water exploded and the fish headed for deep water.

After several minutes of a tug of war, that I think I was not winning the line went slack. Brought the line in and the fly was gone. So I had done along line release.’

Had been watching a cloud and felt a few drops hit me. Headed to the shore and started loading everything back in or on the truck. Since this is an uphill drive from the pond, I did not want to get stuck. Still feeling a few drops. Got out on the road and about a mile from the pond when it became a fairly heavy rain.

Glad I was off the pond but had caught all 4 species that were in this pond. Had a lot of fun.

Hope you can get out on the water.
