Catskills...

What is your favorite river in the Catskills?

“GET THE DRIFT?”

I think I like the Willowemoc best. the fish aren’t as big as some, but it’s a very pleasant stream to fish. Not too big, not too small, just right. As long as you don’t go early in the season on a weekend, you can usually find a spot with no one else around.
Is it Spring yet?

Bob

There is a fine line between fly fishing, and standing in the water waving a stick.

I can’t get myself to pick which one I like best…I love them all because they are all somewhat different. If I want big fish, I’d go to the Delaware Branches, if I want big wild rainbows I’d go to the Main Stem. The Beaverkill also has some nice fish (but you often have to like fishing with a bunch of other people, although that is a good social experience quite often). The Willowemoc is great for solitude.

I couldn’t pick if I tried.

Willowemoc first and Beaverkill a close second. Just love these two streams.

The Delaware and both it’s branches. Wonderful wild trout water.

RW…when you say Willow…do you mean Fir Brook included?

“GET THE DRIFT?”

I,like the man that got me interested in Flyfishing, some 49 years ago,Lee Wulff, choose the Beaverkill. I love fishing all Catskill streams, but there is something special for me about this river. I now live on it’s banks from May first till the middle of October. A dream come true for me…

I love the Beaverkill. There are parts that I love going to, and a certain run that I fish everytime (and it’s not that popular).

The West Branch is a great river as well.

But for true beauty, I love the Unique Gorge area of the Neversink. It’s a hike down (about a 10-15 minute walk, downhill towards the river, uphill back), there’s little hint of civilization (i.e. Rt. 17 overhead), and the brookies are beautiful.

Mike, RW here,

Fir Brook!? Where’s that? I never heard of it.

“GET THE DRIFT?”

Hi Mike
The willowemoc river I like RW don’t know anything about fir brook? RW maybe we should ask around about that when were there for the fish in?

monty

I keep hearing about the fish-in at the Catskills, but don’t recall seeing the dates…?

Sampioen,

Look at ‘Fish-Ins’ within the menu on the left. Click and go to Roscoe, 2005. All the information is there.

Allan

Allan, thanks. I looked under the upcoming events, but hadn’t noticed the Fish-ins before…my bad!

Hi folks, RW here,

With all this talk about the mythical Fir Brook, I did a little research on said subject, and discovered that there is a “Fur” Brook way up the Willowemoc, and deep in the foothills. It was called “Fur” Brook because apparently the old mountain men discovered some pretty good trapping up there during early colonial days.

Subsequent to that, the name of the stream was changed to "Far"Brook because it was so far from civilization, and deep in the unchartered wilderness, folks didn’t see any sense in going all that way just to catch a few measly 5 inch brook trout.

In addition, it is said to still be infested with wild panthers (mountain lions) up there, hence the original dutch word “katterskill” which eventually led to the present day “Catskills”. Rumor has it that there is still a tribe of hostile indians up that way that are said to be responsible for the disappearance of several fly fishers that scoffed at said rumors. Two years ago, a hatchery truck completely disappeared in an attempt to stock these wilderness headwaters, and neither the driver, the truck, or the trout have been seen since.

My advice is, that anyone who is going on the Roscoe fish-in should steer clear of that area like the plague, and only venture up there with nothing less than a fully armed posse. Monty and I will check things out when we get there and let everyone know if it is safe after the two of us completely check it out.

Yours, for a safe and sane fish-in,

RW
