Just when I had talked myself out of buying a new TFO Axiom 8 wt I happened upon Castwell’s weekly column. So, taking his advice to heart and wanting to do my part to keep the industry strong, I am going ahead with the purchase.
Of course my wife thinks I am nuts as I already have, well, many fly rods. I even shared the wisdom of Castwell with her but got a modification of the old mother’s admonition, “if he jumped off a bridge would you do it too?”, she used to let fly when the kids wanted to do something she considered foolish.
But, the column was just the push I needed to toss frugality into the can with many other seemingly worthy but bad ideas, like giving up beer. Thanks JC!

My response to my wife has always been “How high is the bridge and How deep is the water?”
I’ve, also, tried that; “But! CASTWELL SAID… DEAR!” on Linda a few too many times now and all she comes back at me with is… “Oh, COME ON! The man fishes, wearing SUPERMAN PAJAMAS, are you going to be doing THAT next, too!?”
Of course, I try and defend JC with that “status quo thing” and “his position at FAOL” and numerous, other, arguments of his “fine and infinite character”, but it’s not sinking in very well, so I just go my way and buy what I want anyway.Ya’ can’t use pure and simple logic on a red headed Irish female, no matter what.
“You’re right dear, so right. I’m so sorry, but I must confess, Castwell made me do it.” Practice this with various voice inflections and consider adding candy. Feel free to put the blame on me anytime, I wasn’t caught at half the stuff I got away with.
