can you explain it?

I went into a fly shop the other day and was looking at flys for sale and in one of the little cubicles were FEMALE Adams. Having been away from fly fishing for a period of time it didn’t hit me right off the bat, but later I thought, Hmmmm…how can you have a female version of a fly that doesn’t really exist.

It may be a good and useful fly, but it did strike me as funny!

An egg sac is an egg sac. It would depend on what the fish were keying in on, don’t you think?

It’s probably an Equal Opportunity thing. After all, female Adams are legally intitled to the same consideration as the males.

Actually, I was about to design a variant myself, by making the body long, slim, classy and with extra long black hackle. It will be called, of course…the Morticia Adams! I was also going to tie a shorter and more light hearted version called the Gomez Adams…

What about the one tied with Barred Plymouth Rock…

The Grizzly Adams

Or “would you believe” the Don Adams?

LOL! Good One!

Semper Fi!

I was told many moon’s ago that the female Adams was just a female egg lying caddis imitation. It was thought that the Admas itself was tied to imitate a caddis in flight? The grizzly hackle makes it look like the fly is moving on the surface? Seems to work Ron

Gigmaster, you may want to put the “Morticia Adams” fly next to any “coffin” flys that you may have in your fly box. They just seem to go together.

Teastick;
Ain’t it funny how some thread’s sort of go off on a tangent?
Did you know that the “Adams” is a Michigan fly developed in the early 1900’s by a guide for a client named Adams!
Why don’t you break away for PA this August and come up to the Au Sable for the Michigan Fish-In

Don’t forget the Michigan Fish-In August 14th to the 20th. The Holy Water’s of the Au Sable await you!!

Cactus

Jack,

Thanks for the invite. I would truly love to be there and meet some fellow FAOLer’s but I’ll be in upper state New York around the 19th of August to attend my daugter’s wedding.

Didn’t know the origins of the Adams but it’s an interesting note. Are you sure it wasn’t originated here in Pa. because it’s one hell of a fly for our Pennsylvania streams In fact I fished it last weekend and caught several beautiful wild brooks and browns
with it. In the absence of any hatch, it’s often times my go to dry fly.
