maybe I should have posted this question to a new thread.
does anyone else have any experience with cabelas rods other than bowmaker1. Do their rods performance match that of the top brands? Soup says the blanks of the FT models are the same as the Loomis GL3. Does anyone else know if their other models are also Loomis or perhaps another top brand blank? If you can save $ buying the same rod, get a nice warranty (25yrs), and have the same rod regardless of the name(since fish can’t read anyways) should I buy one? Any praise or gripes from you with cabelas?
Just one more reason not to shop there. Found it today while researching something. Cabela’s is kind of like Wal Mart and I prefer not to support them, of course I have a local fly shop that takes care of me.
thats what is strange about it…a police officer with nothing better to do, a person passing out leaflets, impounded and towed car, an attorney, droped ticket, sounds like a new drama tv show…I dont buy it
I have their Stowaway and Stowaway-7 rods, like them both and consider them a great value.
As for the boycott, I was surprised so I Googled it. One guy got terminated after publicity about his distributing literature from the extreme right of the political spectrum. There have been no facts offered as to why he was terminated --whether it was related to his literature or not. It seems like a pretty slim basis for a boycott.
I have no financial interest in Cabela’s, don’t know anybody who works there, etc., etc. But, sorry, it just doesn’t seem fair to me to pass along a link to a boycott like this without checking it out more.
I like there rods and I buy some of there other stuff like camping supplies and such from them and they have Great Customer Service IMHO. When you don’t have a lot to choose from then you have to do with what you to use I have a 3 forks combo 3 wt and to me it fishes as good as other rods I’ve fished with and plan to get at least 2 more one for the wife and 1 for my boy. Then I hope I’ll be living in AR. By then and start trying Global Dorber rods. Just my 2 cents. Later Matt one last thing it’s up to you on what you by and what you use who cares what the other folks fishing are using as long as your happy with your equipment thats all that matters. As I started off with a 20.00 martin outfit that was a combo unit that had backing a wt/f 6 wt line and leader and few flies. I still fish with it every now and then and the wife likes to use it and I use to think everyone was checking my stuff out why fishing then I came to just say hell with them I like it and I’m the one pulling more fish in then them so can’t be that bad. I appreciate the responses. I agree it’s great to support the local fly shop, and I do, but for some of us that like to stretch our dollar as much as possible I don’t mind shopping cabelas. The cost of shipping is less than the sales tax I would pay…Putting aside everyone’s political stance…how does the perfomance of cabelas fly rods compare to the name brands. how bout their reels?
The big brown truck just stopped by my house yesterday. That was the last delivery it will be making from Cabela’s for me. The nearest fly shop to me is 1 1/2 hrs each way so I find it necessary to mail order. But I am a little (maybe alot) right of center and I refuse to support a company that acts in this manner.
Was going to add something else then decided to just bite my toung and say no more as I belive there is more to the story then what is posted on that website! Later Matt
I for one would give up doing business with a company I have dealt with, and been happy with, for 30 years, based on something I read on the internet. We all know anything found on a website is the gospel truth.
Just a side note: I heard on NPR the other day that if Wal-Mart was a country, it would be China’s eighth-largest trading partner. Something to think about.
Rob, I have had no problem with Cabelas equipment in the past. I have a couple of their rods and they cast just fine. Even if a brand-name outfit makes their blanks, the rod you get will NOT be the same rod you buy from that company. If you want a Loomis rod, buy a Loomis rod. Labels do not catch fish, they catch people.
I think I mentioned in another thread that I have a cabela’s pt 2wt that I’ve fished hard over the past five years or so. it is a fine fishing and casting tool. I would say that the reel seat leaves much to be desired. nonetheless, I’m very pleased w/ its performance.
Benjo,
You sure like to bash Cabelas. I guess you didnt learn from your last post about Cabelas. That some of us like Cabelas very much, and will continue to shop there. Its going to take more than them firing one person to change my mind. Besides maybe he was one of the incompetent sales people that you complained about in your other Cabelas post. Would it make it ok then?
Fly shops are great but when it came to equip my classes Cabela’s rods have been thru some ruff handling the past year. Over 100 scouts and grade school kids. I also use their blanks in rod building. Check the blank price to the finished rod in the catalog. I also would love to hear Cabela’s side of the story–to me there must be more to it. Companies dont fire people for ones political views away from work. Around the office would be a problem.
The ft’s are as if not better than anyother “highend” rod out there…1 guy got mad cause he lost his job and blames it on this…prolly not even remotely the cause of his termination,Just another person trying to use the court system to get rich…I’ve been a very happy custmoer of Cabela’s for a very long time…Where else can you buy a Bamboo rod blank fish it for 6 mo. have the tip break, call em up and ask how to get in touch with Sharpes so you can buy a new tip section…Only to have the service dept. lookup how long you’ve had the purchase and have you strip all your hardware and send it back for a free no q’s replacement???..Jim & Dick Cabela have my patronage for life!!!
That is what I was going to say there is probably more to the store then is out right now. And time will tell what is really up. People get fired from there jobs all the time for a lot less and there are alot of them out there you never here anything about. I say the web is the best way to get something going rather it’s true or false. I’ll keep shopping there if they fire have the store if they went something like non smoking and a bunch was in the parking lot smoking. It’s there rules and I still say this person has probably done something on store grounds sometime to lead to this. IMHO. Later Matt
I am saddened by the fact that any of you would believe a story on a website that gives no author’s names, no supporting information, no newspaper references, or the name of the organiztion behind this.
FYI - the backer of the boycott site appears to be the National Alliance which, according to the “third world” brochure on that site, is “An organization of Whites who aren’t afraid to speak up for our race”.
All the patriot talk is the big tip off.
note - this is not an attempt to start a First Amendment debate - I just thought this info should be disclosed.
I have their 5wt Stowaway rod and love it. I got it as a combo and the reel malfunctioned after a year, but when I contacted them they sent me a new one even before I returned the old reel. Good solid product and great customer service.
I agree with “bluehackle” 100%. Names, dates, PROOF???
I have a Cabelas PT 7’ 3wt. I really like it. It is a moderate action and is plenty forgiving. It can still step up and put some line out there when needed. Great small stream rod which is what it is used for. I had two Cabelas reels. A Drake, which I still have, is a decent reel and has served me well. It is a little on the heavy side. Although I didn’t notice it until I bought a nicer reel. I had a Cahill that I lost out of my pack and don’t miss it at all. It was cheap looking, acting and feeling. I don’t like their fly line at all.
As stated before their customer service is usually top notch. The few times I’ve had a need to contact them they went out of their way to make it right.
