Browning Silaflex Medallion info needed

After reading 5 pages of poetry in December from Forum members in love with their old fiberglass rods, I’ve been keeping my eye out for one.

This morning at a local swap meet I found a Browning Silaflex Medallion model 22980 at a price I couldn’t walk away from. It’s an odd length: 8-ft., 1-1/2 inches, but the tip wrapping indicates that’s the original length and not the result of a broken tip in its past.

So far today I’ve had no luck searching the web for information on the rod, specifically when it was made and what weight line is recommended. There’s nothing really similar on eBay. Can anyone enlighten me or suggest a website I should check?

Thanks.

I’ve seen those Browning rods sell on eBay. I’ve been tempted to jump in a few times but held off. Try yours out and see what happens.

Thanks for the website info, Bamboozle. I had no idea such a site existed.

Mr. Taylor, living in the “South,” as you do, you may have forgotten that some of us Yankees up here are suffering through an extended period of hard water. I’d love to try it out. I’d love to walk outside and not get frozen ears, too.

Bamboozle, your website tip was right on the money. Had my answers, plus more interesting information, within 12 hours. Thank you.

Yep, them guys know their stuff; I read the replies.

Hopefully you’ll join in the fun and re-discover the joys of glass like I did!

OBG - If you value the decal on the rod, be very careful with it, They are prone to come of in pieces if slightly abused. I might suggest a couple of coats of varithane to keep it intact. Just a thought. PS: I have a browing Silaflex spin rod. I bought it new in 1973. It came in a silky dark brown sock and a bronze aluminum tube. Enjoy your rod. Jonezee
