Here is a fly called the Brassie. There are a few ways to tye this fly, but I prefer the one pictured.
Brassie:
Hook: Mustad 9671 size 14
Thread: Danville Black 6/0
Body: Lagartun Fine Copper Wire
Thorax: One strand of peackock herl from the eye
Before tying in the Peacock herl, add a small coat of head cement in this case hard as hull and wrap the herl forward with the stem side of the herl facing the eye. The head cement enforces the herl and cuts down on the uses of excess material.
Nice fly. Although the Zebra Midge is my favorite tailwater nymph, Brassies still work well and I make sure I have a bunch. Originally, the fly was tied with a small section of black heat-shrink tubing at the head; peacock looks a lot nicer.

Black with silver wire/bead is #1, red with gold wire/bead is a close 2nd; nothing bigger that a #20. Brassies I’ll tie up to a #16.

A very simple and effective pattern, for sure.
I like to tie them on a scud style hook, like the Dai-Riki 135.
Wrapping two strands of one color of wire and one strand of another color simultaneously can produce a more pronounced segmented look.

Thanks, that’s a variance of the lightning bug and the fly on the left was my attempt at a blue assassin. As you know they work well on the Hooch. My granddad who had a small farm in MS taught me to braid twine off bales of hay when I was a kid. Like Mr. Scott likes the furled look, I like to braid. Just bent that way.
