Bought another boat- God help me....

“Hole in the water you pour money into”- definition of boat. Happiest two days of a boat owners life; The day you buy it and the day you sell it. I know, couldn’t resist anyway. Boat in question is a vintage (old) 17 ft Aquasport center console w 90 Johnson. I know the boats history, and have fished it since one of my best friends was previous owner. Its had a new deck installed, powerhead was rebuilt a few years back, and new roller trailer w power winch last year. Came with VHF, Loran, 3D Fishfinder and spare everything from life jackets to trailer tires. My buddy upgraded to a 33ft charter boat, and he offered it to me for such a fair price, I couldn’t bear to see it “leave the family”. When both the girlfriend and my sister told me I was an idiot if I didn’t buy it, I started scraping together the funds… I just mounted the new GPS and wired the power cord for the winch today, so she’s ready to splash in time for the fall run of stripers. Boat has seen a lot of fish come over the rail; including a night of 22 keeper bass, totes of cod, haddock and fluke. I’ll have to see if I can do something about christening her with a fly caught striper though…

Sounds like a nice boat and if your sister and girlfriend encouraged you to buy it, it’s got to be right. Good luck to you.

Dear backbeach,

You did good.

Older boats should never be allowed to change hands and transfer to strangers. There’s too much history.

It should be a right fine rig for your neck of the woods.

Good Luck!

I have had 2 footitis many times , you know 10 ft aluminum to a 12 ft 4hp …14ft 10hp … 16ft with 65hp 20ft 110hp 33ft 2x225hp etc … I loved all those boats in turn . Somewhere around 40 years of buying boats my 2ftitis reversed back down from a 33ft campion hardtop to a 10 foot pontoon boat for flyfishing .
But I never had the great fortune to have my wife/girlfriend encourage me to buy a boat like you have . For gods sakes go for it man it may never happen again . The boat you work on is the one you will love most . That saying should be Boat a hole in the water I shovel money into at a hell of a rate . I have always liked getting a new boat but never liked parting with an old friend .
Congrats!

Snow on the roof but with fire still in the hearth

Silvertop, I’ll try to post a picture. I’m a bit of a techno-challenged individual though. I have a pic from when my buddy had it in its current configuration (electronics box, etc.) I have a scanner, but I’ve never used it. I’m spoiled, my girlfriend works in info technology and she isn’t here to walk me through it. Thanks JT, and Tim. Gnu Bee, I know what u mean… I have my Dads old 16ft Mirrocraft in the yard, 30 johnson needs a rebuild, and having just bought a house last fall, I had a hard time justifying a 2000.00 rebuild on an old engine. I got the Aquasport for what it would’ve cost for a new 30 hp… This boat will get me out into Vinyard Sound, Cape Cod Bay (in decent weather anyway) and I can still handle it alone - which is key for me. I’m thinking of picking up a used 9.9 for the Mirrocraft to get on the FW ponds around here with 10HP restrictions. Still have the canoe in the fleet too…

OK, Here goes, hope it works…

Dear backbeach,

What a nice rig! I’ve always dreamed of a nice center console to fish the bays and nearshore waters.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Tim, I feel fortunate. I’ve already had some banner trips on her with my friend, including one with an 11 lb summer flounder that covered the bottom of a 94qt igloo. Mark replaced nearly everything on it and the trailer with better and stronger hardware, from a Keelshield (keel guard)to a roller trailer, upgraded powerwinch, lots of rodholders- literally a truckload of spare hardware and accessories- two new spare tires, extra hubs and bearings (packed). I only really have to throw in a couple of stripping baskets to make it a decent flyfishing platform. I was speaking with a local guide who suggested using those pop-up gardening barrels bungeed to the fore and aft and weighted along the bottom perimeter with a length of hose weighted with egg sinkers. I’m looking forward to trying that out. I’ve got the clousers and peanut bunker flies ready to go- the bait is already pouring into the bays up here, and the stripers are waiting. I am so looking forward to this fall…Plymouth and Duxbury Bays are about a half hour from my house.
