Boo rod ?

South Bend # 47 8’6"- What line should this rod throw?Dry fly or nymph rod?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a bunch.

Mike

Mike,

I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I was told by a guy who refinishes a lot of SB rods that those with a two digit number are the bass tapers and those with three digit numbers are the dry fly trout tapers.

Can’t help with the line weight, but if you can check the rod for a series of letters on the boo, such as “HDH or E”. Those were the old line designations and there are equivelant charts around.

Here’s a link to a line conversion chart when you find it. http://www.hookhack.com/flylinesize.html[/url:b4127]

REE- Thanks for the good info.I was looking to buy a bamboo rod that I could afford, but wasn’t quick enough, sold.Im still looking.

Buzz-Thanks,I printed the chart.Good info again.

Mike

REE- just went back over your reply. That fellow who refinishes boos have them to sell also?
Thanks

Mike

Mike, Sorry Buddy. He only does the work for clients who don’t want to get their hands dirty. He does an great job though. The rods look like they are brand new. Original color wraps, hand rubbed varnish.

If your of a mind to do the work yourself, keep an eye on e-bay. There have been several threads here lately about refinishing boo rods that helped me out a bit.

REE

Mike, what are you looking for? A lot of folks get into bamboo rods and are disappointed when they get one that is either too heavy for their fishing preferences, or doesnt perform well for any number of reasons. Knowing what kind of fishing you like to do and what you want the boo for will help someone decide on what they have that you may really like.

Tight lines…

LD

a two digit SB at 8.5 ft would be a 6 or 7. I personally would use a 7 but many use a 6. a trip to the fly shop to wreak havoc on their ‘try’ lines may be in order
splinter

LD-
Thanks for the reply.I am looking for a 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 ft 4 or 5 wgt.Custom is out of my league.Used rods seems to be the ticket.Under $300.Not an ebay buyer.

Mike

Mike,
For just a little more, you could get a brand new rod. Might be worth looking at. New rods start at $425. I have one of these rods that I bought used. It is less than perfect cosmetically, but the casting… sweet. http://www.troutcamprods.com/aboutme.htm[/url:3f07a]

You can also check Blue Collar Cane for inexpensive used rods: http://hometown.aol.com/planesmith/myhomepage/business.html[/url:3f07a]

Also, the for sale section of the Classic Fly Rod Forum is a good place to look. ( http://p205.ezboard.com/bclarksclassicflyrodforum[/url:3f07a] )
