I’m interested if anyone has any tips on fishing a San Juan worm for bluegill and other panfish? I will be fishing it on a lake.
What is the technique? Any tips?

just throw it out there. give it a twitch. theyre not that fussy.

Like most flies bluegill hit, just let it drop naturally and they will hit it thinking it is a dead bug or worm falling down thru the water.
You can also combine it with a dry like a gurglepop to have an additional fly choose and strike indicator.
Exactly. If you want to make it fun, go a step further and tie on a small popper with a nymph/bug (or two) of choice on a leader beneath that (as long as you need to get to the fish). You’ve got a couple of water columns covered and it’s a blast when they’re on. I’ve caught 2 at once plenty of times.
Cool, man! I’ve many times considered trying the San Juan worm on panfish but just haven’t gotten around to it. I’ll try to do it this year. Thanks for jogging my memory on this!

Just my opinion, but I crack up when I see an article in a fishing mag on how to catch panfish. They will eat anything that gets infront of them…period. My favorite flies are the ones my kids tie up, the uglier the better, plus the kids get excited when they see me catch fish on their creation.
I’m with Joe on this one. I’ve received those wirey things in swaps and wondered what in the world to do with them. I doubt if I even have one in my boxes. But, I’ve had those days when just trying something on and putting it into the water would have been wonderful. This year I’m going to San Juan! JGW
Anyone can catch little ones. It takes a lot of skill and luck to consistantly catch the big ones. T*tty brim we like to call em.

A recent San Juan that I seen a magazine article was a group of the worms on a hook. Smaller size one in front a couple in the middle side to side and on the hook end. I’ll be tying up a few to try myself this spring. BILL

My buddy and I, used San Jauns, made simply out of rust colored “ultra chenille” tied to the center of a #16 dry fly hook (Mustad #94840).
No weight, just a 9’ tapered leader (6X),4 wt. lines and it was merely a “cast and let lay there, to either sink or float”, type situation. We caught both, Bluegill and Crappie, using these today. It was a lot of fun! We even got one of our three, LM Bass on one of them too.
