Blue River (Colorado)

I will be taking a family ski trip March 18-23 and we will be staying in the Silverthorne area. While reading my Fly Fish America magazine I noticed that the Blue River was listed as one of the best winter trout streams and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on fly patterns. I have read alot about Mysis Shrimp. Would a scud be a good pattern for these? I am also trying to decide if i should bring my 4 or 6 weight rod. Do you guys know of any other streams close by that would be worth checking out. This is my first time fishing in colorado and any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Austin

6wt would be a good choice but the 4wt will work

anieman - If you plan on fishing right below the dam you can tie into some absolute monsters just gorging themselves on the mysis shrimp from Lake Dillon. In other parts of the river the 4 wt should be ok. I usually swing by Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne each time I’m up there…they’re always helpful. Have fun…that area is my idea of Heaven.

Normand thanks for the patterns they all look really simple to tie. What sizes of midges should i expect. I am guessing size 20-24?

JohnnyB I am planning on fishing right bellow the dam some, and maybe I’ll hook one of those big ones if Im lucky. I have already been to Cutthroat Anglers website and hopefully I’ll be able to visit the shop.
