Bleached moose body hair

Where Is a good source ?

Ray,

I found a real nice piece at Duranglers when I was in Durango a few years ago. Blue Ribbon would be another place to check - their hair selection is the best I’ve found.

Scott

I’m actually going to try doing some myself, my nephew got a 950 lb. moose this year and since he decided not to have the hide tanned (wish I could have) I cut a big chunk off, got as much fat trimmed off the back as I could and then washed in dawn dish soap and borax. Stretched and tacked it out on a board and put borax on it.

Next step is going to be dumping the borax and with cutting off some more of the dried up stuff. Then I’ll wash it again and doing fresh borax - when it’s done in a few weeks I’ll cut a chunk and try to bleach it.

I have good luck bleaching Moose hair with regular old drug store peroxide. It takes days but you can get any color from a nut brown to a deep honey and the hair comes out none the worse for wear. I just put a piece in an old coffee carafe and fill with peroxide. Change out the peroxide every 2 days or so and realize when wet it will look about 1 shade darker than when dry. After about a week I get a nice deep golden honey that makes great tailing material for size 16 and up

I bought some very nice stuff at Blue Ribbon Flies. It was I saw it I had to have it.

Second that source!
