Biot Caddis Emerger

[CENTER]This pattern was shown to me in Western Washington more than 20 years ago, and has recently been collecting dust in my box. However, this fall it has made a resurgence, catching a good number of fish after multiple refusals with several patterns. A timeless style and a much duplicated pattern, it’s simple to replicate and fill those empty bins.

Ever tie it with the other side of the biot facing out? I, personally, prefer it that way.

Byron,
I often do on other patterns. But seldom on caddis emerger patterns where replicating a smooth abdomen does not seem as effective for me.

Not my tie, but the caddis emerger biot body I am referring to.

Yessir, great pattern. But now we are talking a different stage of the emergence. I tend to tie a smooth biot body as well when I am suspended in the film. But most emerging pupa are gilled. I feel a swimming or tumbling pupa does better when impressionistic. I do lean towards a smooth/coated body on many larva patterns though.

Another pattern…

Another pattern…

Nice pattern as well.

It all comes down to what fish want on a particular water. Out of 4 different waters I fish regularly, I have 4 different emerging pupa patterns that works best for me on a partiular stream. One with a bugbond body, one latex body, one dubbed body, and the one shown above. Feed them what they want.
