Today I caught the biggest bass of my life. It was 20 inches long and I caught it on a black and grizzly woolly bugger I tied myself. I’m really luck it got it in because it got itself so buried in weeds I couldn’t move it with my 7 wt. and had to hand line it. I think had I not been using a 20 lb test tipped I wouldn’t have gotten it in. I have pictures but in my excitement I didn’t get any that show the full length of the fish. You can tell it’s big but it’s hard to tell just how big.
This day will live forever in my memories.
Congradulations on your biggest bass!
Nicely done! And, on a fly you tied yourself makes it all the better.

Hi Cycler,
You must have had a real fight on your hands. I’m glad that you successfully landed the fish. Be sure to retire the fly and put it some place safe. It will make a great momento. 8T
Here is the best picture of my bass. I hope next time I catch a big fish like this I’ll be calmer and get a better picture. I am so lucky I got this fish; it could have gotten off when it buried itself in weeds. And it fought so hard. I have caught other big fish, including a 12 lb carp I got on a 12 ft rod, but I had forgotten how hard they pull. And since I was in a kayak and the fish could pull me around made it all the more exciting and difficult. At least I didn’t get pulled into a fallen tree which was nearby.
Awesome! Way to go!!
Hey Cycler
That’s awesome!
I am almost 50 years old and have never caught one that nice!
Bet she/he put a tug on the ole rod…
Congrats.
Joe
Nothing better than catching a personal best on a fly you tied yourself !
Congradulations!

I don’t want to hijack this post, but I do want to say welcome aboard to jdfogle2. Best site around for fly fishing info and friends.
Nice goin’ on that big bass cycler68. That’s a dandy!
Yep, that’s a big fish. Amazing how much more exciting it is when something that size eats something you made yourself, isn’t it?
“And since I was in a kayak and the fish could pull me around made it all the more exciting and difficult”
Congratulations. I remember the first time a pike towed me around in a float tube. It is a thrill.
Hi Cycler68;
Congrats on a great fish! I was “towed” in my kayak last year by a large bass but only had my cell phone to take a photo. It was dark and cell phone camera could not capture the image. I now have a Pentax Optio W10 and take pictures of all my fish that make it to the kayak.
Now if I could just hook another really big one, get towed and a picture at the end.
Congrats again;

Thanks for all the great replies and sharing your experiences!
I still am on a emotional high that I got this fish it was just so unexpected even though I was working hard toward getting a big fish. And when I think of the things that went wrong during the battle I am still amazed that I won. When that fish buried itself in the weeds I couldn’t feel the fish pulling I truly thought I had lost it. But when I started pulling on the leader and the fish was still there and, better yet, it was a big bass I really got excited. I just shake my head in amazement at the whole affair.
Congrats on a very nice catch!
Hi Cycler68;
Just listening to you describe you experience brings back memeories of mine! When I hooked my large bass, first I thought I snagged a stump, then the stump moved so I thought it was a snapping turtle(couldn’t be a fish)and finally I wasn’t sure what it was but was hoping I would land it without breaking the tippet. Finally, after being towed around for about 4 minutes that felt like twenty, I lipped one of the biggest bass I’ve ever caught on any tackle.
The only disappointment was I couldn’t take a picture of it, it was too dark for my cell phone camera!
Keep talking about your experience, I’m really enjoying this!

I bet your heart was pounding for quite a while

Good for you. A lifetime memory.
It doesn’t count unless there is a pic
