Beginner Vise Recommendation

Hi,
I have recently been introduced to the world of fly fishing. And now I am considering fly tying as a winter hobby to hold me over.

I am looking to acquire some basics as christmas presents since my relatives are always looking for ideas. After reading the information on this site, I think I have round my choices down to three vises by Griffin. Please comment on my choices. Two are stationary vises and one is a rotary. I am not sure I need a rotary but it is only $15 more. My guess is I will be tying mostly trout flies with the occassional freshwarer bass fly.

I am lookng at the Griffin Superior 2A

Griffin Oddessy Spider

All opinions welcome

I can only recommend you go to a local fly shop and actually sit down with one of your choices and the shop owner.

I would be very biased to tell you that Renzetti traveller is the vise I use and recommend it for you.

I have and use the Spider, I have tied thousands of flies on it. I will probably never change to another vise. The Guarantee on it is also great. JMHO John

Click on sponsors: Then go to BTs tying.

My advice to any first time tier is to get a Danvise.

I do not own a Danvise, but I have tied on one.

It’s the only beginning priced vise that could last a lifetime…well, maybe not a lifetime.

Normand gave some very good advice. If you have a shop near you that has the vise you want, go there and try the vise, along with several other in that price range. Find out what works best for you.

If that is not an option for you then the Griffen vises are good vises. Lots of folks on the board tie on them, and Griffen really backs their products. Another alternative is the DanVise. It too, is a true rotary vise, is well made and sells for under 90 bucks.

Mike --Griffin is a good choice – I have the Odyssey and 3 ARP as my main vises and 7 model 2A’s for teaching. I have used the Spider ,you will like the full rotary as you advance in tying . All Lifetime guarantee

Griffin make a very good vise and what you get is more a personal choice then anything else. I would do as Normand sugested is to stop by you local fly shop and take one out for a test drive if you can. The spider might have a bit to much to adjust for a first time tyer and Griffen does sale base for all it vise so you not locked into a clamp on model.
Ghost.

I just got a Griffin Montana Mongoose vise recently, and I don’t know how I got along without it! Griffin Rules!!!

Semper Fi!

Spend the few extra $$$ and get a rotary. You will be thankful you did.

go with a Danvise. i have one and love it.

Thanks everyone for their responses. I do have a local fly shop that carries Griffin vises. Last time I was in their I only saw Renzettis. Hopefully they carry some of the models I am interested in. I see I can stop by and do as Normand suggested.
