Beautiful hand-crafted fly box

On a recent fishing trip, I met a guy from Southern California. He was in the Yellowstone area to fish for the entire summer. He showed me some wooden fly boxes that he makes. I couldn’t believe how beautiful and practical they were.
Both sides have a decorative wooden inlay.
The box is Quilted Cherry with inlays of Karelian Birch.

The interior has cork strips for the flies.

Each corner has a strong little magnet to “snap closed” and stay closed.

The brass hinges are very strong!

Unfortunately, I missed seeing him before I left and did not get contact info. I only know his last name which is “Murphy”. I don’t think he is a tier, so I will probably never get his full name or a contact.

Thought others might want to see his handiwork.

beautiful work!

Thats a real work of art Byron. I’d bet if you had one of those you’d tie slightly better just because of where your fly was going.

Some years ago I had access to the facilities to make a box like that (though I doubt the skill to do such a nice job). What stopped me was the price of those hinges. I could buy 3 of the boxes I currently use for the price of a pair of those hinges.

I hope it isn’t the same on your side of the pond, but here society no longer values the skill of someone who can produce work like that.

Cheers,
A.

I certainly do over here. If only I could do that!!!
