Ron,

That’s awesome! Thank you for posting the link! We’re going to be in MT for the second week of August and were going to make that drive. Looks like it will have to wait for another trip. I feel for the folks that make their living off the summer visitors. It’s going to be a tough year!

Wow, thanks for the info. Hope it’s not too hard on the locals and they get it open soon. Was there a drought problem in the area last year?

We are vacationing out there the first two weeks of September and were hoping to use the Beartooth. We will be backpacking and fishing some lakes in the Beartooth /Absaroka’s. We hadn’t actually picked the lakes we were going to yet, but I had been leaning toward a trailhead off of 212.

Any suggestions for first time lake fishing/hiking in the area? Looking for 4 day trips, mostly hike out and set up base and day trip from there.

Thanks,
John

Is the hwy open from Cooke City to Island Lake? I will be up there in Late July to hike to Jasper/ Golden and Albino lakes.

I was hoping to take the scenic drive over the pass this weekend but thats a no go now. At least most trailheads should be accessible by either going from cooke cityt to the west side of the slides or by going from Red Lodge to the East area of the slides. It all depends on where your starting destination is…for me its Bozeman so its not too bad.

Hey John…send me an email and I will see what I can do as far as possible lakes to fish. Let me know what you have in mind and I will get you some info.

Kytroutbum: I suspect the road will be open to that area from Cooke City (no hard info though)

Take care everyone and cya around. Mark

as an afterthought…for those who will be weanting to use the Hiway…there is a lot of road construction just outside of Cooke City…you may have to wait for 30 minutes as the road is down to one lane in places and there may be equipment working.

I think the smart thing for people that want to use the Beartooth highway would be for them to contact the state by the internet or by calling them and find out first hand what is going on? The state may close the whole highway so they can get equipment to and from the job sites. I am not saying they will but they could? It would make it a lot faster for them. They also are not sure that the areas shown are the only ones that are in bad shape as they will have to look from the ground to make sure the rest of the highway is in good shape. On last nights news they said it may take as long as two years for it to open again. You have to remember the higth the road is at. Weather can close in and be real bad for many days at a time. You can get snow up there anytime of the year.
I say contact the state. I would (If it were me) be looking for another area to hike in or fish in for this year anyway. To many questions here? And the state will not be letting people on a road that “May” be hazardous to them. Just an opinion. Ron

PS: For people needing information on the back country fishing here in the west one of the best books I have seen in sometime is “Fly Fishing the Rocky Mountain Backcountry” By Rich Osthoff. It has information on many of the areas out here and has good information by a person that has hiked them all. Great information on the Beartooths to. It is put out by Stackpole books and costs $19.95
I get nothing for this information.

Thanks, I usually use Hunter Peak Campground as a base camp so I should be okay. I was fishing the Sheepherds behind Long Lake the summer before last and saw the Deep Lake fire start.I was amazed at how dry it gets out there. Hope you all got some moisture w/o anymore slides.
