Battenkil Barstock III

I’ve got one of these and have noticed alot of spool wobble and alot of wobble or play on the gear inside on the shaft. Anybody else have this problem? The reel is not very old either.

John, I have the same reel. I have not noticed any spool wobble. I have not used this reel very much but it is new this year.
I would call Orvis and ask them

“Thet cain’t be good!” Have not heard of that before. If you call Orvi$, let us know what they say. I’m sure they will replace it free, but, what went wrong and why is important too. Thanks for bringing this potential problem to our attention.

I have four BBS reels. (one IV and three III’s) and none of them have the problem you have described. The oldest of them is a III and I use it very frequently with no problems.

Give Orvis a call and they should fix you up. Hopfully it’s more of a unique-type problem rather than a batch-type problem.

I work part time at Orvis in Bellevue, Washington. We’ve haven’t experienced many proglems with the Battenkill Barstock. It seems pretty bulletproof. However, it is Orvis policy to do whatever is necessary to make the customer happy with a product. I’m sure that if it can’t be fixed that Orvis will replace it without charge.

Well, maybe it’s just me. I sure thought the new machining would make tighter tolerances but the spool will definitely wobble back and forth and the gear will wobble on the shaft.Am I expecting too much from the $100 price range?

Is that the British made or the Korean made?

I’d say the Korean since it’s fairly new.

Pspaint, the newer reels are now being produced in China not Korea.

According to Orvis the entire factory was disassembled and moved from Britain to China where it was reassembled to cut labor costs.

With the exception of the reels being made by Chinese verses English laborers and not having the made in England emblem they are the identical reels.

They all have a tiny bit of freeplay in them.

If there is excessive play, then as mentioned before go to a Orvis dealer or send it directly back to Orvis and I am sure they will replace it no questions asked for you.

I sell more BBS and mid-arbor Battenkills then all of my other reels combined.

For the money you cannot beat them.

I really like the reel. I just don’t remember the old Battenkil that I had doing what this one is.I even have the Barstock II and it’s great. Just a tiny bit of wobble.Orvis has done me right on everything else, I’m sure this will be no different. I just needed the opinions of some of you PRO- fessionals out there. Thanks and God Bless!

I have a Barstock 2 while my son has a 2 and 3 ,no complaints from us on them.

I have the same reel…mine was English made, in case that may differ, but mine is great. Hopefully, your problem is isolated, but be sure that Orvis will make it right. Their customer service is outstanding.
