Headed out this morning to one of my favorite ponds. Had new access so I could drive to about 150 yards from the pond. I do not have to work the canoe across the dam or go up along hill when leaving the pond.
Got to the pond and found a sum of algae over most of it. There were some open spaces that I thought I could fish. Had an Only and a Gilly on the rods. Cast with each of these and got one gill on each of them. The fish hit just a s soon as the fly hit the water. Tie to change and I went with a black alpaca rooving fly with rubber legs and a glass bead head. This fly stays very near the surface.
Made a cast that was a few inches off the edge of the algae. Immediate hook up. Got the fish in and it was an 8 inch bass. Released this fish and tried again. On the third cast I picked up a decent gill.
Casting around the area I caught another dozen small bass. As I released them I asked them to send their cousins. This did not work.
Moved about 30 feet and tried again. On the first cast I hooked something with shoulders. This fish took a long time to bring in. This is the largest bass that I have ever caught in this pond. This fish was about 25 inches long with a very deep belly. She is still swimming in the pond.
Several more casts in this area did not result in any more fish. Moved to the next open area and started casting again. About every seventh or eight fish I caught was a gill. The rest were bass. I did get one crappie.
Thean the bite turned off. I made about 30 casts and did not have a single hit. Decided it was time to head home. Had 9 gills and the crappie. But it was fun to be on the water.
