Went out to one of my favorite ponds. Last night the temperature was still in the 80’s. Did not load the canoe. This morning the temperature was 75 degrees. Knew I would not be at the pond very long.
Went in with two 5 wts and a fish basket. Had big expectations. There was no wind. Could see that there were fishing rising in the center of the pond. Too far out for me to cast to with the trees behind me.
Got to the place where I wanted to start fishing. This pond has a history of fish liking an Alpaca roving Hare ear type fly and an only. Had these on and started with the only. Got several very light hits on this and saw that crappie were taking it but flipping off as they came to the surface or when I tried to bring them in over the algae at the edge. after about 25 casts the action stopped at this place so I move up the pond a bit.
To shorten the story I did the same tig up the west side of the pond. Also across the dam. I did manage to land two gills and one crappie. This is out of over a hundred bites.
Sun was up and the temperature was climbing. Decided to head home and get in the shade. When we get out of this heat streak I will get back to this pond with the canoe and hopefully do better.
