ausable river new york

hello fellow flyfisherman:
I live in ottawa and made the pilgrimmage to the ausable river in early august"a little late for a report but o well.
We went to all the flyshops in wilmington andevery shop but fran betterses basically told us to ********. We fished the pocketwater for the first day and caught only little brown trout. Most wereon bombers and stimulators. Next we found a nice pool and we really started to catch some. My friend caught a 15 incher on an olive bomber and we also lost a few. Last cast I had a hard hit. It turned out to be a 20 inch brown I caught it on a cinnamon turck’s tarantula. It was my first time ever at the ausable and I think I will remember it for a long time.
For anyone going I would definitely reccomned fran better’s shop and not to waste time being treated like ***** at the other shops. It is definitely a trout heaven!

First let me welcome you to the FAOL BB. A most formidable site! Good friends, great inforamtion and just a comfortable place to visit!
You should think about coming over to the Michigan Ausable Fish-In next August. I don’t think you’ll have that kind of treatment here.
example: Gates Lodge even gave me the info on a less expensive place to stay in Grayling!!??

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

Hmmmm… I only know of 2 shops in Wilmington besides Fran’s. Kevins by the dam /bridge in town and the Hungry Trout fly shop on Rte 86. Other than that you pretty much have to go to Lake Placid and Jones Outfitters ( whose owner recently passed away)… I have found all those shops to be very angler friendly, Fran’s shop having been there by far the longest and is also by far the most visited.
If you go to the Ausable again email me and perhaps I can meet you guys up there and show you a couple of my favorite spots…Bob
