Asension Bay: What equipment do I need to take...

…if I’m going to fish for bones, permit and small tarpon? I have a Winston Ibis 8 wt. with a Tibor Back Country reel. Is that enough?

I have a Redington 6 wt. Is it worth taking along?

If I were to take a back up outfit, what should it be?

The 8 weight is perfect for Bonefish and I would also take the 6 weight just in case there are some low wind days or you get into areas that are sheltered from the wind.
I would also take at least a 9 weight or a 10 for Tarpon & Permit.
An 8 is a little small for a large, (15 Lb Permit), or a good sized Tarpon in the 20 to 50 Lb range.

Dick,

Thanks for your reply.

What about leaders and tippets? Is fluorocarbon material worth the investment?

zaxaca …
You have to remember that virtually all of your fishing will be subsurface, so fluorocarbon material will defiantly be advantageous as it sinks. I use regular mono leaders and then add a fluorocarbon tippet.
You can buy a 9 foot 15 pound knotless tapered leader and then add 2 feet of 10 pound fluorocarbon and you will be all set for the Bones.
For Permit just adjust the basic mono leader to a heavier strength and add the proper strength fluorocarbon tippet.
I like 15 pound tippet for Permit.
For tarpon you will probably use a 20 pound class tippet in your leader which can be mono and then a 50 or 60 pound fluorocarbon shock tippet.
Hope this helps,
DickM.

Most of the bonz there are small and you may prefer your 6wt instead of the heavier 8wt all day. If you are ‘only’ sight casting then the 8 will be fine. You are spending a fortune on a great trip and want to scrimp on tippet material? Ya gotta be kidding!

Thank you for your help.
