I’m considering a freedom hawk yak for fly fishing–is there anyone out there with experience in this yak? I’m curious about which size is best for a 220#/6’ 2" person, comfort, stability while casting and standing, how do you transport it around and what waters are safe for this type of yak? Also is it easy to fish from?
Thanks, Richard
I have used both the 12 and 14 ft models, I’m shorter and about 20lb heavier than you are and the 14 ft model really is stable with the pontoons out. I stood up and fly fished out of it and it’s really stable. I own a Heritage Redfish 14 and although the redfish does paddle a little easier, there is no contest when it comes to stability between the two.
I hauled it around in the back of a shortbed F-150 using a cargo bar to hold down the back of the yak and tied in the front with some rope. I don’t think I would take it out in the surf tho’.
It does not have the storage area in which to put a milk crate , and you have to stow your tackle up front, but there is storage in the pontoons behind you.
Best thing to do is take one out on a demo and see if it fits your style.
