Reading an article in a back issue of a fishing/hunting magazine, I came across an article of “Unbeatable Summer Trout Flies”. The Tellico Nymph came up as a great fly after the spring hatch is over. It’s fished in swift water with a bit of weight on the leader. It’s fished dead drift with a slow jerk, hand twist retrieve. It’s supposedly good in the Eastern/Western streams& rivers. Anyone use it?
Yes sir! Trout, bass, panfish, this is another one of those go to flies. If it swims and has fins it will eat it. Still water or in the currents. Try fishing an unweighted version with a small split shot or two about 8-12 inches up from the fly. Let the shot bounce off of the bottom and the fly float about freely in the current. Vary the sizes too. I had a number 10 that got destroyed by several large mouth bass one time. I was a young guy and learned the value that day of carrying more than one fly of a given pattern.
I tied up a bunch of these a couple years ago for a swap on this board. I think they’re a very effective fly in the Smoky Mountains. I’ve caught some of my nicest fish in the Smokies on that fly.
