Anyone Remember the Mayflytier??

Hi,
Visiting my son and noticed this vise I gave him a number of years ago. It has a heavy bronze plate with the impression of a mayfly. There is also a neck harness as it was advertised for use ON STREAM with the bronze plate against your chest.

I may take it back with me. Given the base weight (3-4 lbs.) it is more practical as a desk vise.

I can’t imagine holding that around your neck to tie flies by streamside. But it is a pretty cool looking vise

Yes. It was advertised as desk or use IN the stream

Hopefully, not a very deep stream.

As far as you can wade…

Byron, it can truly be said of you, “You are a man of many vises.”

Hi Byron,

If I remember correctly, that was the vise that had a drawing or picture of a guy sitting back in his Laz-Y-Boy recliner with that on his chest, and was advertized as one of the only vises made that you could tie with while relaxing in your living room watching TV or whatever. It was a really big joke on the old VFS forum board when it came out, and it wasn’t out there for very long. I tried looking through some of my older Fly Tyer’s, FF & Tying, and Fly Rod and Reel issues starting in the late 90’s, and going to around 2002, and didn’t spot the ad. I’m just about positive that was the vise though. Your probably one of the only folks that actually own one. A real collectors item sort of !

Edited: Found the ad in the summer 2001 issue of Fly Fishing and Tying magazine

Regards,
Mark

Let’s see, where did I put that bodkin… OUCH!
