anyone know about a "Carpet Fly"?

I was told that I should tie these up to appease finicky tailwater trout, but the description was vague. I tried the search function plus Google with negative results. Can anyone shed light on this mystery and maybe provide a recipe? Thanks, Jim

Jim… go to Hans’ page. The picture Hans has there says the fly was originated by George Close. You’ll find it by going to Jason Freunds patterns he has on display. Hope this helps you.

Depends on what “carpet fly” you refer to. There is also one in the UK called the carpet fly, if you want the recipe for this one too I wil gladly look out my books and post the pic and tying info for you.

In some areas the Carpet fly is synomymous with the Sucker Spawn…I believe the name came from the material used (from a carpet) when the fly was developed.

Here’s how I tie it but I usually don’t embellish it with a tail as I’ve shown here.

Thanks folks, The fly shown by L Williams seems to be the one the person I spoke to was referring to, as he mentioned both sucker eggs and the looping of the carpet fibers that he used. He said steelheaders use it alot, but we don’t have them around here so its’ not a commonly used pattern here. Thanks for the recipe. One more question; do you ever weight it, or does that detract from the fly? Thanks Again, Jim

backbeach: No lead wire but bead-heads work nicely. I carry both beaded and not.

Mike is right about the Close Carpet. You can also find it on page 13 of the Fly Pattern Encyclopedia, bottom of the page, center fly.
Close Carpet
hook: size 12 to 18, dry fly
thread: gray
tail: natural deer hair
rib: thread
body: tail hair, crisscross wrapped with thread
wing: deer hair, fanned
hackle: Dubbed carpet yarn fibers
head: thread
