any suggestions for new york salmon?

i have 2 clients heading to New York for salmon in about 2 weeks, im not sure on the river, or what area they will be in, im still waiting for them to get back to me on that…

they wanted black, olive, and brown buggers… they said they will be using sinking tips, and i wanted to send them with something other then just buggers to try. i personally never went salmon fishing, and with that, dont know what would work decent… any suggestions my fellow tiers?

wishing i was going too,

This is based on observation not experience because I’ve yet to do well when I’ve gone but others have.
Anyway, aside from the buggers which I have seen as being successful, I watched a guy do great using large hare’s ears in black. Looked like size 10 or 8 long shanks. Maybe other dark colors would work too. Also egg imitations.
Not much but that’s all I got.

Spoof, have you over looked the obvious, Google? I did and came up with the following:

http://globalflyfisher.com/staff/petti/salmon/favorites.html

http://www.flyfishingconnection.com/nysalmon.html

http://www.cnyflyfish.com/articles/archive.html

Last time I was up there in '96 these were the rage amongst the meat sackers:

We had good luck with eggs (Creamy Delight), egg-sucking leeches, stonefly nymphs (#12 Black Prince).

Regards,
Scott

is it just me, or do all of us forget about google? lol thanks guys, now i have a bit more of a direction to follow.

you know its funny, i picked up a mold at an auction for treble hooks like that awiale back, maybe i’ll put it to use finally…

If you go to the very bottom of the page on the second link. There is a tab for flies, click on it and it will bring up a listing by catagory, and there is one for Salmon.

Hello All
The treble hook with the lead will get a fisherman lots of trouble. In NY the Encon Officers are out in civilian clothes looking for people who try to snag salmon and steelhead during the run. John Rhodes list of patterns is right on the money. I’ll be on the Salmon river Sunday and monday with three fishing buddies.

In Nova Scotia, and eastern Canada, you would be looking at Blue Charm, Cosseboom, and Black Bear Green Butt as 3 very popular patterns. Oh, and Micky Finns will also take Salmon. Given that they want buggers, toss in some of the above as well as they can be fished on the same set up so they can just tie one on, so to speak.

I’ve got a pattern in the Fly of the Week Archives (the HammLim Minnow), which I think would also have a decent chance with Atlantics, so you could try a couple of those as well.
