Any experience with boobys

Hello,
Does any one know how to tie boobys or some where i can get instructions to tie them.Maybe a book explaining.I have tied any kind of flies but these give me headache.

I believe Josko has a pattern that is successful. He ties his own and they look effective.

Not sure but this may help. Click on flies at the top then scroll to booby. John

I wish you all everlasting flies and tight lines.

AH…boobys. We need more of those on the streams, thats for sure.

I used to get boobies skating on the hill
in front of the house. Mom would put
merthiolate on it, blow on it for a second
or two and put a band aid it. Good as new.G Warm regards, Jim

I have quite a lot of experience tying and fishing Boobies. They are a stillwater fly but if you want to try them on-stream no reason why you shouldn’t.
I would have answered sooner but I’m having a lot of trouble with the lousy landline.
If you drop me an E-mail, I’ll collect some info together. By the way most people over here now-a-days use a foam cylinder instead of the ‘Booby balls’.
OK i’ve got your E-mail address, I’ll send some info in an attachment.
They are not really difficult to tie.

Hi Donald,

My post just prior to yours has a link
to a pattern using the foam cylinder. It
does seem simpler than the methods I’ve seen
using stocking material to capture the foam
and hold it in the proper place. Warm
regards, Jim

Hi Jim
Another advantage is if you leave the ends of the cylinder flat, you can use stick-on-eyes.

I see that you have gotten soe info on how to tie the fly but not really how to fish it. Basically it is a high floating fly that is used to suspend several “other” flies and give them a desired action. The uses are limitless.

For instance. Assume that the trout are holding over vegetation off the bottom of a still water. You could tie a leader with several emerging nymphs with a Booby on the tip of the leader. Attach it to a full sinking fly line. This will allow you to suspend several flies slightly above the vegitation without hanging up. You can vary the depth of the nymphs and action by the length of the leader you attach to the end of the fly line.

Also imagine that you want to work several flies in the surface or cause them to emerge to the surface. Again a booby on the tip of the leader will allow you to impart action on weighted flies and still fish them very slowly and thus keeping them in the strike zone where fish are holding.

Boobies by themselves may or may not be the effective pattern. However they can make a cast of flies extremely effective under certian conditions.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was some kind of freaky/sneaky invasion from the Drake forum.

Hi Avidfisher,
In the process of looking up info I found the FAOL page that Jim recommended. I think all
you need on Boobies is there.

I did notice that on the page linked that he sands his own styrofoam eyes. You can also just buy styrofoam balls and tye them in with a pocket of panty hose. The pantyhose pocket is very durable and is super quick if you are production tying.

John,
Over here there are foam cylinders of various sizes (dia) and colours available from any tying supplier (quite cheap).
I sometimes just roughly trim them with scissors after they are tied, then if I feel like it I will sand them down, but I usually don’t bother.
It is curious but the originals by Gordon Fraser had proper nymph type bodies, but pretty soon everyone else was tying the garish marabou tailed and fluo chenille bodied versions which strictly speaking are not nymphs.

Donald:

I noticed your comments on stocky bashing with Boobies. Any particular method or color seem to work best? I’ve got a group of kids who are going to be fishing a stocked lake next month. Most of the fish will be freshly stocked rainbows with a few browns. How are you guys fishing the Booby for stockies?

Hi you can either fish your boobie with a floating line or sinktip the fly will pop up from the bottom, try to vary your retrieve, sometimes a fast retrieve will work while other times dead drifting is the key

Hi John,
Stockies are not very particular about the colour, a marabou tail and bright two colour chenille body will do. Fished on the bottom with a fast sink line and a 3ft to 10ft leader is usually the way. Use a short pull and then a pause, repeated, causes it to duck and dive on the bottom. If you want to get complicated I can send you an article about the original boobie nymph.
